How to prepare your car for shipping
- Remove personal and household items from the vehicle to cut unnecessary weight. The transporter will not take responsibility for any of these things if they get lost or damaged during transportation.
- Remove loose external parts and accessories. Use protective padding to cover any items you fail to take out.
- Wash your car before getting it inspected. A clean vehicle makes it easy to check for dents and scratches on the body. You may take photographs, from all sides, showing its present state.
- You should only leave about a quarter tank of gas. The only time the truck driver will keep your car running is when loading on and unloading it off the truck.
- Test the battery terminals to make sure that they fit and work correctly. Keep it fully charged and check the tire pressure as well. Top up all fluids and get all mechanical problems fixed.
- Prepare a spare set of car keys and hand them over to the truck driver. Note down any special features on the vehicle that might need attention during transportation. Disable the alarm system.
- Make sure that you sort out the license plates and your driver’s registration at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
