How to prepare your vehicle for shipping
- Clean the car so that it becomes easy to spot cosmetic damage during inspection. The vehicle will go through this process on the collection day and at the delivery point. When you receive the car, you can go back to the inspection report and check for any new damage.
- Clear out the trunk and other compartments. Do not keep any of your personal belongings inside the car. Transport companies do not take responsibility for these items. Doing that would be going against the safety regulations. Most transporters keep a personal items policy, which can help you understand the regulations.
- Check the tire pressure and top-off all the fluids. Make sure there are no leaks and keep the battery fully charged. Let the transporter know if your car leaks of fluid or if it has mechanical issues. Leaking vehicles cannot go on the top deck of an open trailer since they might cause cosmetic damage to other cars.
- Run down the gas to about 1/8 or 1/4 before handing over the vehicle. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recommends this level. The only time that the truck driver will drive the car is when loading or unloading it on the trailer.
- Get a spare key for the ignition and a set for all the compartments. The truck driver will need the keys but do not give out your only set because losing them during the process might leave you frustrated.
