Braga, the municipality and city of North Western Braga district in Portugal is the part of cultural and historical Minho Province. With plenty of educational centers and employment opportunities, moving to Braga can be easy. However, to smoothen out your move, you can import your car or personal vehicle from US.
You can drive it for 180 days maximum in a single calendar year. For this, vehicle registration should be in your name. Only you and family members will be able to drive it in Portugal for the period. Presence of valid insurance and driving license from USA is also must.
Moving vehicle to Braga.
Those thinking to move to Braga, Portugal post retirement or for work on a long term basis, will need to register their vehicles once the customary 180 days are over. Before that however, you should apply for residency permit. Proper inspection of the motorcycle or the car is also necessary to ensure compliance with the required highway standards. Any inspection centre authorized for the purpose within the country will be able to perform this task. Standards vary based upon age, make, and model of car.
Rules are different for collectable and classic cars. However, in general, a vehicle conforming to the European standard passes the inspection here. When applying for residency permit and local driving license you have to surrender your US license first. You will also need to pay the custom duties and VAT associated with the vehicle and only brand-new ones remain exempted from such payments. In case, you plan to sell the car within the same year, the associated taxes remain due.
Specific license and registration.
Duty free shipping of the vehicle inside the country is allowed only once every 5 years. “All in one” card system for cars is prevalent in Portugal. This means a single card serves as the logbook, vehicle registration, and the license plate of the car. You need to keep this card within your vehicle always. Along with this card, you require a license brand-new plate as well. Car registration will occur at any civil local registry office. The language used for filling up the various forms is in Portuguese. To know more about import duties, you can contact the Embassy of Portugal.
Citizen's Shop or the customer care centre will help you in the process of translating the documents. Portuguese government has taken this step to help foreigners with opening of utility accounts, navigate local bureaucracy, and ID card application. Fluency in this language is must because you will come across only Portuguese documents everywhere.
For vehicle transport, you should also know about the available shipping methods. These are Roll on/ Roll off and Container Shipping. RORO is more cost-effective than latter. Here, the car is driven on board and secured on the deck. It will remain there for the duration of the transit. You cannot keep anything inside the vehicle. Container shipping is more expensive of the two and ideal for luxury vehicles. Your vehicle is put inside 20 feet or 40 feet containers and household goods are put alongside it.
