Car Transport Michigan (MI) Near Me: Premium AutoTransportCompanies
Michigan has a storied history as the birthplace of modern automobile transport and has long attracted big business for its close proximity to the northeast corridor and our neighbor to the north, Canada. Detroit, MI, which perhaps suffered among the worst of all American cities during the economic collapse of 2009-10, still has many vibrant areas that offer a glimpse into its automobile-centric history. General Motors headquarters are located in Detroit MI. The downtown area is home to a very active riverfront scene, with a diverse array of restaurants and nightlife, as well as an assortment of new casinos and professional sports stadiums.

Vehicle Registration Process in Michigan
Registration of your vehicle with Michigan’s Secretary of State requires your certificate of insurance, driver’s license, vehicle title, and registration fee payment. A vehicle registration service may be provided by a dealer if your vehicle was bought from a car dealership. You may apply for a TRP if your vehicle will be used in the short term.
If you have recently bought a new vehicle or become an MI resident, your vehicle must be registered with the MI SOS. Renewal of registration for a car is a must.
Note: Other types of vehicles, such as ATVs and custom-built vehicles, have different registration requirements.

Your vehicle must be registered immediately with the MI SOS as soon as you have established your residency in the region.
Typically, vehicle titling and registration take place at the same time.
Go to an MI SOS office to get a car registration certificate and bring the following:
- An MI no-fault insurance certificate (your old home state car insurance coverage is not applicable).
- Existing outside of MI car title.
- The presence of all owners is a must for the final inspection report. If any of the owners of the car title are not available, they should:
- Complete the Form MI TR-128.
- Present a copy of their ID card or driver’s license.
- Outside of MI car registration (recently expired or current), if your car title is with a lienholder.
- A completed MI Form TR-11L.
- A valid ID (birth certificate, photo ID, outside of MI driver’s license).
- Payment of titling and registration fee (refer to “MI Car Registration Costs” below).
Your MI vehicle registration certificate will expire on your birthday.
Vehicles Transferred or Purchased from Private Sellers/Individuals

The registration and titling of a vehicle bought from a private seller is your responsibility. It is recommended by the SOS that you visit their office together with the seller for the registration and titling process.
You must have your vehicle registered and titled within fifteen days of the purchase date. You are allowed to drive during the first three days without plates to complete the registration process of your vehicle. The title assigned to you serves as proof. Go to your local SOS office for registration and bring the following:
- Signed over a car title.
- Owners must show up in person. Any owner that will not be able to show up, should provide a completed Form MI TR-128 and a copy of their ID.
- The following should be included in the title:
- Odometer reading,
- Signatures of the buyer and the seller,
- Lienholder’s signature if needed,
- The VIN.
- A valid ID (driver’s license, ID, United States passport).
- MI no-fault insurance certificate.
- Payment of taxes and fees (refer to “MI Car Registration Costs” below).
Gifting and Transferring Ownership of a Car between Family Members

The vehicle registration process of a purchased or transferred car between members of a family is identical to the process listed above for “Purchased from Private Sellers/Individuals”.
You are exempted from having to pay sales taxes if you buy or receive the vehicle from the immediate relatives listed below:
- Parents (including step-parents or adoptive parents).
- Siblings (including step-siblings or half-siblings).
- Children as well as adopted children.
- Grandchildren and grandparents.
- Wards or legal guardians.
The Secretary of State will qualify you for a tax exemption even without relationship proof. However, The MI Dept. of Treasury may get in touch with you to confirm your relationship.

Transferring an MI Vehicle Registration
Your current license plates can be transferred to your newly bought automobile as long as the Secretary of State has its record with your legal name. Go to any Secretary of State Branch Office for the completion of a transfer of vehicle registration and bring the following:
- Your current MI car certificate.
- It will be sufficient if the number on your license plates can be verified in the database of the Secretary of State.
- The new car title.
- The Secretary of State will only accept a title application copy if the vehicle title is already being processed.
- Michigan no-fault insurance certificate, if the insurance carriers were changed from the last renewal of registration.
- Payment of a transfer fee: $8.
Note: Some added fees will be applied if you have an application for a title.
Temporary Vehicle Registration

Michigan offers temporary permits for registration effective for thirty days and for sixty days for vehicles that will not be used in the long term (e.g. if you are always abroad or on active duty). The permit cost of the registration fee in this case is:
- Thirty days permit- $20 or annual registration fee portion (whichever is greater).
- Sixty days permit- $40 or annual registration fee portion (whichever is greater).
There is a service fee of $10 for both permits. Go to any Secretary of State office for the application and bring the following:
- MI no-fault insurance certificate.
- The MI vehicle’s title.
- Payment of a $10 fee for the temporary permit.
Registration of Non-Resident and Military Vehicles in Michigan

For a MI military resident: There are no vehicle registration waivers or exemptions for MI military members residing in Michigan. You may follow the vehicle registration steps above, whichever may be applicable to how your vehicle was purchased.
For MI military based outside of Michigan: Submit the following for the registration of a vehicle during out-of-state deployment:
- A completed MI Form TR-11L.
- Attach a TR-114 Form to have the registration/title mailed to a different address.
- Copy of your vehicle title.

- Payment of taxes and fees (refer to “MI Car Registration Costs” below).
- For a money order or check, pay it to “State of MI”.
Note: Late fees for the renewal of registration are not necessary for MI military members based outside the state.

Out-of-state military resident based in Michigan: MI military residents based in the state can drive their vehicles with their home state plates, but their registration must be kept current. If you will be residing in Michigan, refer to “New to MI?” above for the registration of your automobile.
Out-of-State Residents: Vehicle Registration
Generally, registration with the Secretary of State is not necessary if you are a non-resident student studying in Michigan. However, the exemption will be canceled and MI license plates will be required if you are getting a full-time or part-time job.
Non-residents working or living in MI may register their vehicle with the MI Secretary of State once residency is established in any way listed below:
- Voter registration in MI.
- File a MI individual income tax.
- Open a business in MI.
- Acquire a MI driver’s license.

Frequently Asked Questions
While Michigan doesn’t have specific restrictions for car shippers, all transport commercial trucking is regulated by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The agency is responsible for issuing permits to transport companies based in Michigan. It issues restrictions on the size and weight of a transport truck.
Transport companies operating between states also need to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which issues every interstate trucking company a USDOT number. Similar transport rules apply to every city like Grand rapids, Detroit Mi, Ann arbor, etc.
The simplest way to contact MDOT regarding a carrier’s license is to send them an email at [email protected], making sure to list your reason for contacting them in the subject line. You can also contact MDOT by phone at (517) 241-2400 or send a fax to (517) 335-1640 between the hours of 7:30 am and 4:30 pm Eastern, Monday through Friday.
Interstate licenses are also easy to look up. Ask your transport company for their USDOT number, which you can then enter into FMCSA’s Safety and Fitness Electronic Record (SAFER) portal. This website allows you to quickly check a transport company’s license, as well as their safety record.
Transport complaints made against commercial trucking companies are handled by the Michigan State Police. Complaints should be made to them via email at [email protected]. The police will investigate your transport complaint, and try to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
The FMCSA also allows you to file a transport complaint against interstate transportation companies. You can call their office at 1-888-DOT-SAFT (1-888-368-7238), as long as the incident occurred within the past nine months. Be aware that their office is open from 8 am to 8 pm Eastern, Monday through Friday.
There are several factors that determine how much it will cost to transport your vehicle. Here are some of the main components, as well as some advice for keeping your transport cost as low as possible!
Distance
The most important factor in shipping price is delivery location. The farther the shipment will need to go, the higher the transport price will be. It’s also generally the element that’s least able to be adjusted!
Door-to-Door vs. Terminal-to-Terminal Service
While some customers need the convenience of door-to-door transport service, a more cost-effective option is to choose terminal-to-terminal service. With this transport method, you’ll get exact pickup at a nearby facility, where car will be loaded onto a truck and shipped to another terminal near your final destination. Once it reaches the terminal, you can retrieve it.
Type of Carrier
You can choose to ship your car in an enclosed or open-air car carrier. Enclosed trucks provide better protection against the elements and damage from debris, but they usually end up costing much more. An open-air carrier is cheaper. For most customers, both options are equally effective.
Timing
Rates differ depending on the time of year that you transport your automobile. If you transport your automobile during winters, you’ll probably end up saving money. No matter when you ship your car, if you can be flexible on your pickup and delivery dates, you can get best shipping experience.
If you’re a senior, student, or military personnel, chances are there’s a transport discount available for you! But even customers who don’t fall into those categories can find discounts. Look for seasonal specials, and don’t hesitate to ask your representative if they have any other discounted rates that you may be eligible for.
Usually, you won’t need to present anything to your carrier apart from your driver’s license. However, you may want to have some additional documents on hand, just in case. Proof of insurance, vehicle registration, enclosed heavy equipment documents, and a copy of your title are all good to have on hand so you don’t have to go looking for them if the need arises.
At A-1 Auto Transport, our car carriers provide special care for all of the automobiles they transport. For more valuable cars, we recommend using an enclosed car carrier. The added expense pales in comparison to the protection an enclosed carrier offers.
Not only will it provide protection from the weather and road debris, but an enclosed carrier also hides your automobile from prying eyes, making it even safer.
In general, the answer is no. Transport carriers must have an insurance policy to cover the damage caused during transit to any location like Ann arbor, Detroit Mi, Sterling heights, etc.
After the right pick up and delivery of your transport, take a look to make sure no damage occurred during your shipment. If you notice anything, let us know and we’ll start the claims process right away.
For pick up of expensive cars, however, you may want to consider supplemental coverage. While the carrier’s policy will cover your car, it may not be enough to cover the total value.
