How to prepare a car for shipping
- Cleaning the vehicle will help the transporter to make a correct inspection. You may run preliminary checks as you record all the existing cosmetic imperfections. Use a camera to take close-up shots and dated images of all sides.
- Date all your records and make sure that you share them with the transporter, who should acknowledge the same on the Bill of Lading.
- Do not leave personal belongings and valuables inside the vehicle during transportation. Such items may shift in the car, leading to damage during transportation. The U.S. Department of Transportationdoes not allow vehicle transporters to move your household goods.
- Remove the CD and DVD players, radio faceplates, GPS, speakers, TVs, and all the aftermarket accessories inside the vehicle. In many cases, these items do not fall under the transit insurance protection.
- Do not fuel up for the trip. Too much gas creates potential safety risks and may make the truck weigh more than authorized. Leave a quarter in the tank, which is enough for driving the vehicle during the loading and unloading.
- Remove all the custom accessories fitted on the exterior and use a protective cover on the non-detachable items. Fold-in the side-view mirrors and retract the antenna. If you have a convertible, make sure that you secure the top to keep strong winds and debris from damaging the interior.
- The vehicle might accumulate unnecessary toll charges along the highway if you fail to deactivatethe tags. Disable the alarm system to keep it from draining the battery by triggering off during the trip.
- Provide a set of all the car keys to the truck driver. The truck driver might need to open up the vehicle for inspection at the checkpoints. Find a locksmith to make spares so that you can secure the originals.
