Perhaps surprising to some, it’s not terribly difficult to register a vehicle on Antigua. The process is relatively straightforward and the information on this page will help you understand what you need to do and where you need to go to do it.
It’s important to remember that vehicles on Antigua drive on the left-hand side of the road, which, of course, is the opposite side used in the United States. As a result, most of the vehicles on Antigua have the steering wheel on the right side as well.
That is not to say that they’re aren’t cars with the steering wheel on the left—there are—but driving one can make visibility and maneuvering through traffic difficult for some people. Of course, there are some that don’t mind seeing the island from the other side of the car and many visitors do choose that option.
If you’re a visitor to Antigua and plan on bringing a vehicle into the country, you only need to get it registered if you plan on having it there with you for more than three months.
The actual process of registering a vehicle on Antigua is fairly cheap and straightforward as long as you’ve cleared it through customs (see link below for more information on this) and obtained your local license.

Getting A Local Driver License On Antigua
In order to register a vehicle on Antigua, you must be 18 years old or 16 years old for motorcycles. The licensing fee, converted to U.S. dollars, is roughly $550.
If you have a license from a foreign country (including the U.S.), you will need to go through an application process to obtain a valid local license. This includes presenting the following information:
- Valid driver license from home country
- Photo (passport sized)
- Visa, work permit, or proof of temporary residency
The cost of a temporary license is $20, which is good for three months. If you have an international driving permit, you will still need to get a local license to drive on Antigua.
To get license plates on Antigua, you must first register the vehicle and provide proof of insurance. If it is a new car that is being brought into the country, then the customs paperwork for the vehicle will also be required.
