Perhaps surprising to some, it’s not terribly difficult to register a vehicle on Antigua. The process is relatively straightforward and the information on this page will help you understand what you need to do and where you need to go to do it.

It’s important to keep in mind that vehicles on Antigua drive on the left-hand side of the road, which, of course, is the opposite side used in the United States. As a result, most of the vehicles on Antigua have the steering wheel on the right side as well.

Not that there are no left-hand-drive vehicles there are. However some drivers may find them difficult to control due to reduced sight and traffic flow. Of course there are those who like the opposite viewpoint and many tourists decide to observe the island from the backseat.

If you’re a visitor to Antigua and plan on bringing a vehicle into the country, you only need to get it registered if you plan on having it there with you for more than three months.

Getting A Local Driver License On Antigua

In order to register a vehicle on Antigua, you must be 18 years old or 16 years old for motorcycles. The licensing fee, converted to U.S. dollars, is roughly $550.

If you have a license from a foreign country (including the U.S.), you will need to go through an application process to obtain a valid local license. This includes presenting the following information:

• Valid driver license from home country
• Passport
• Photo (passport sized)
• Visa, work permit, or proof of temporary residency

The cost of a temporary license is $20, which is good for three months. If you have an international driving permit, you will still need to get a local license to drive on Antigua.

To get license plates on Antigua, you must first register the vehicle and provide proof of insurance. If it is a new car that is being brought into the country, then the customs paperwork for the vehicle will also be required.
