Costa Rica Motor vehicle laws.
You are permitted to import a vehicle on a short term temporary basis, or on a permanent basis under the regulations of Costa Rica Customs Department. As the regulations on imported vehicles are strict, it is vital that all safety and emission inspections are done in USA, two months before shipping it out from there.
Temporary and permanent import of vehicle.
This permit is given when you are importing it for less than three months. There are no applicable duties and taxes as the vehicle has to be sent back to USA within the given time-period. You are required to submit the documents with copies. They will keep a whole set of the pertinent documents and that is why having the requisite visa is essential. If you are a Costa Rican citizen, then just a proof of residence suffices. Additionally to obtain the permit, you have to pay for the permit.
The procedure to get the permanent import permit is the same except that you have to pay all of the taxes. If you though buying a new car would be a more affordable option, you are mistaken. It is cheaper to import your vehicle. However, there are documents that you have to submit are:
- Bill of Sale of the vehicle.
- Title deed.
- S- issued driving license.
- Owner’s passport.
- Registration documents.
- Insurance certificate.
- Bill of Lading.
If the vehicle is under lien, you will be required to submit the authorization letter which has been certified by the Costa Rican Consulate.
