Maputo is the largest and capital city of Mozambique. Known as the ‘City of Acacias’ due to the verdant trees, Maputo is a port city with a natural harbor. It is the hub of trade and commerce, contributing majorly to the economy. With increasing employment opportunities and educational facilities, there are been a growth in the number of expatriates over the years.
No matter whether you have a job here or plan to stay on an extended time period, importing your vehicle from USA can be of help. With plenty of seaports, in the country, namely Port of Beira, Maputo, Nacala, Quelimane and Pemba, shipping is the fastest option of transporting the vehicle here. However, some of the ports might not allow RORO shipping so check before the vehicle is shipped. Therefore, find out the port that allows before you even plan to ship your vehicle. You need to be present on the day, when your vehicle is shipped over here to the port. The port is not supposed to store the vehicle for the owner to retrieve it later.
With any import there are a number of documents that are needed to validate the import process. Some of these include:
- Valid passport and driving license.
- Insurance on the vehicle.
- Proof of insurance.
- Bill of Lading.
- Bill of Sale.
These documents will be required at U.S port and at the Mozambique Customs department. It is best to keep multiple copies for submission as and when needed.
Methods associated with vehicle shipment.
There are primarily three methods, associated with vehicle exportation to Mozambique. There are only two practical methods among these three, as air shipping is extremely expensive and cannot be afforded by majority of people.
RORO shipping method is considered to be the least costly option of your vehicle’s shipment. This vehicle needs to be empty, devoid of air conditioning gas, and any other personal belongings. You need to steam clean the vehicle, leave the car jack, and spare tire and an extra set of keys in the vehicle. The vehicle is driven on and off the ship using its own wheels. Then it is secured on the deck of the ship till it reaches the Port of Maputo.
Another option is Container shipping, where owners of the vehicle can now enjoy the liberty to ship their vehicle along with personal or household belongings. The container is packed, as per the regulation of the Mozambique Customs. To reduce the cost you are allowed to share the container space with others.
If you need details on the documentation or any other regulations, you can contact the Embassy of Mozambique or the U.S Customs. They are likely to provide you with valid information, associated with US exporting laws. You have to comply with the shipment requirements of the vehicle, as set by the regulations of the Mozambique government.
