If you want a true representation of the south, then you might find it in the state of Mississippi. Situated between Alabama and Louisiana and right along the Gulf of Mexico coastline, this state is not only known for its namesake river, but also for its historical significance in the Civil Rights movement, it’s many bayous and natural settings and its slow and easy way of life. The state is also where much of the country’s catfish supply is derived, and its beautiful coastlines beckon visitors to come and enjoy the calm bay waters that lead to the Gulf of Mexico. Recreation is big here, with a number of national parks found within the state. From camping and swimming at Gulf Islands National Seashore to fishing and kayaking at Natchez National Historical Park, the list of things to do around the state requires creativity and a sense of adventure, but there is plenty to explore in this southern state. Many people enjoy traveling here just to take a load off and enjoy a much slower pace of life when undertaking some of the activities available.

You will find the locals to be friendly and truly Southern, with good manners and a willingness to accept strangers into the fold as a family. However, you are also expected to reciprocate with good manners and ingratiate yourself into their Southern ways, with a deep respect for the land and a disposition that matches that of the Deep South. If you have plans to explore the state, then you are most definitely going to need your vehicle to do it, which means you may need to find a Mississippi auto transport company to get the job done. Finding a good company requires research and making sure that the company in question is willing to deliver your vehicle to wherever you are, which in Mississippi can be a bit of challenge considering the fact that there are so many small towns lining the state.

You must proceed to the office of the tax collector along with your driver’s license, vehicle title, your VIN, an odometer data, and your payment of the fees in order to process the registration of your vehicle in MS. Some vehicle owners must have a vehicle inspection after the registration is completed. You may transfer the registration and customized plates between vehicles, with the exception of standard plates.

License plates in Mississippi are required, particularly for newly bought vehicles and new residents. The information listed below will be your guide in registering your vehicle in the state of Mississippi.

Moving to Mississippi?

You will be given 30 days to process your vehicle registration in MS through the Revenue Department. There is a penalty of $250 if you miss to meet the deadline.

To start the process, go to your local tax collection’s office with:

  • A valid ID card issued by the state;
  • Your vehicle title (indicating the address and name of the lien holder if applicable);
  • An odometer reading;
  • Recent registration details;
  • The payment for any associated fees.

Car insurance proof is not a requirement when you apply for a MS vehicle registration compared to other states.

You must complete an application form for a Registration/Title during the process. An original form can only be requested from your local tax collection’s office. There is no option to download one at the moment.

Dealership bought vehicles

 Whether you buy a used or a new vehicle, your dealership will initiate the process of registration and title application for you. You must confirm with your dealership if all documents and processes are complete so you may get started.

Tentative vehicle tags

 You may purchase a tentative tag from your dealership when you buy a used or new vehicle from them. These tags are only good for 7 working days.

Purchased vehicles from private individuals

You will be responsible for registering the car if it was purchased from an individual. Your vehicle needs to be registered within 7 working days after your purchase, and within 9 working days, if it was bought from another county.

Go to your nearest local tax collection’s office with:

  • A valid ID card issued by the state;
  • The transfer title of the vehicle;
  • If bought from a different state, an odometer reading is required;
  • VIN (to determine taxes);
  • The payment of any applicable fees.

Car insurance proof is not required in MS, but you still must have auto insurance. There is no additional requirement if the car is given to you as a gift.

How to Transfer a Car Registration

For license plates (standard)

The owner and the vehicle must indicate the same details on a standard license plate issued in MS. Otherwise, the license plate becomes invalid. Standard plates are non-transferable.

You need to surrender the plates to the nearest local tax collection’s office should you sell your vehicle.

For license plates (specialty)

You are allowed to transfer specialty plates as long as the target vehicle is listed under your full name and has the same vehicle type.

You must proceed to the local tax collection’s office with:

  • A license plate;
  • The title of your vehicle;
  • A driver’s license issued in MS;
  • The payment of any applicable fees.

Non-Resident and Military Car Registration

Military personnel/residents assigned within the state

 MS does not have an exemption in terms of vehicle registration for most military members who reside within the state.

Veterans with disabilities are an exception. Mississippi waives taxes on plates for disabled veterans. To be eligible for this exception, you need to:

  • Provide authorized documents from the office of Veteran’s Affairs.
  • Be fully disabled.

Submit the required documents to the office upon registering the vehicle and ask for a Disabled Veteran plate instead of the standard license plate.

For MS military members assigned outside the state

Mississippi does not have any grace periods or exemptions to resident military personnel assigned outside the state. You may ask someone to renew vehicle license plates if the expiration date is approaching.

For military members (non-residents of MS)

 You are not required to have a MS license plate if you are a military member assigned in MS from a different state. This is also applicable if you have dependents.

You are exempted from paying an ad valorem tax if you plan to register the vehicle in MS. To be exempted:

  • You must follow similar steps indicated in “Moving to Mississippi”.
  • Submit a “Domicile Letter” coming from the base’s legal division.

Registration of vehicles (non-residents)

Having a MS vehicle certificate of registration is not a requirement if you live outside the state and presently study at a university or college in Mississippi.

If you do not reside but are employed in MS, you need to secure a license plate if:

  • There is an intention to vote.
  • You currently have an apartment or house in MS.

Registration Fees

Associated fees in registering a vehicle in MS depend on the car’s model, year, county residence and several factors. Applicable taxes and fees are indicated below. However, you still need to communicate with the local tax collection’s office to get the specific rates.

  • Passenger car registration tax: 14 US Dollars;
  • Bridge and Road Privilege Tax charges:
    • Passenger Vehicle: 15 US Dollars,
    • Pickup Truck: 7.20 US Dollars,
    • Motorcycles: 8 US Dollars.

You also need to pay sales, use, and ad valorem taxes. These charges are dependent on the type of vehicle, value, and your residence county. You may contact the local tax collection’s office to check these taxes.

How to Secure a Duplicate Copy of Vehicle Registration

You are required to get a replacement of your registration document if you lose it, if it was stolen, or damaged. You will be reprimanded if you get caught driving without a copy of it.

To start the replacement process, go to the local tax collection’s office with:

  • Your driver’s license issued in MS;
  • Payment of any applicable fees.

Vehicle inspections in MS

 Only vehicles with tinted windows are required to have a safety vehicle inspection. If your vehicle has one, call the Public Safety Office to locate an inspection office near your area.

After you pass the vehicle inspection, you will obtain an inspection certificate, which must be stuck on the lower left corner of the vehicle’s windshield.

License Plates in MS

There are different types of license plates you can choose from when you apply for a MS car registration certificate. They vary from vanity and standard to specialty and personalized.

How to replace lost MS license plates

You must request for a replacement if the plate is stolen, lost, or damaged. You need to process it immediately.

Follow these steps:

  • Secure a Stolen or Lost Tag form from the local tax collection’s office.
  • Ask assistance from a local enforcement team to fill out the form.
  • Submit the completed form to your local tax collection’s office.
  • Pay the applicable fees.

How to Register a Vehicle (Non-Operational)

If your vehicle registration expires, even if you are not using it, you are still liable to pay renewal late charges, unless you are able to prove your vehicle was not in use for that period. For instance, a storage acknowledgement receipt would be good enough as a supporting document.

Otherwise, the best thing to do is renew your plates even if are not going to use it in the near future.

Reviews from Customers in Mississippi

  • I bought a Dodge COE recently in Texas, so I was looking for a company to transport it to Mississippi. After putting a few ads, tens of companies called and spammed us with emails, but none of them were what we were looking for.

    Each one seemed a bit off. The quote was either too big or suspiciously low; some were just unfriendly and unlikable, while others reeked of a scam. Finally, I told my sister about my situation and she recommended Joe’s company.

    A1 Auto Transport met all our criteria. Joe has impeccable communication skills. He was friendly, explained the transport details, and gave us a bunch of options for our vehicle. These differed depending on the type of truck we wanted to use. We went with an open carrier in the end due to the lower price.

    Finally, the truck arrived. It had an open trailer carrying 3 other vehicles. The driver explained they were all heading to Mississippi, so they wouldn’t delay our transport. I got my car back 3 days later, a bit earlier than they estimated. But hey, if you’re going to complain about faster service, then it’s not the company for you.

    For all those who prefer professionalism, and awesome services, I highly recommend it!

    - Kevin T.
  • A1 Auto Transport means stress-free. I shipped my Toyota Prius from Chicago to Mississippi, and they were very flexible in terms of pick-up and delivery time. I’ll surely put them on my favourites list. The car arrived safely and in perfect condition. Other than a bit of dust caught on the road, there’s nothing to report. It was the best service and a very pleasant company!
