*Moving one classic car in a dedicated 20-foot shared container service costs. This is the safest and most reliable way to ship. Other items may be included in the import containers to help save your charges when moving.

It can be complicated to ship a vehicle internationally. Still, the importation and export laws are more or less consistent with those of the United States, making the shipping process a little easier than it would be for other parts of the world.

Generally, the duty on imported autos is 10%, and there's also a VAT tax of 20%. For motorcycles, the duty is usually between 6% and 8%. This resource has a good explanation for more cost information and about the value-added tax.

*Note that the value-added percentages on car imports can fluctuate slightly depending on several factors and requirements.

Environmental Concerns

Germany has strict environmental standards, which can cause additional charges for people shipping a classic car to the USA. The country also has restrictive ecological zones, requiring a sticker if you're operating a vehicle.

Residency advantage

If you're becoming a permanent move resident and forfeiting residence in the U.S., you can move a vehicle without paying any duty or terminal handling charges. This is contingent on being a new resident and having been consecutively outside the country for 12 months.

Road width concerns

Something that shouldn't be overlooked when transporting cars to Germany is that many roads are smaller and narrower than in the U.S., making it challenging to navigate with the larger, wider motor cars that are more common in the German States.

Based on our expertise in moving, we have the following list of resources:

  • Pile drivers

  • RVs and motorhomes
  • Industrial equipment shipment

There are several ways to ship your oversized cargo and/or heavy equipment with things being a little easier from an East Coast location such as New Jersey compared to West Coast Shipping ports such as San Francisco or Long Beach. The following methods are the most popular, yet we are open to exceptional cases and welcome a call concerning those.

Shipping Cars Method

Vehicle Lift On/Lift Off

Lift On/Lift Off (LoLo) is a common form of car transport for inoperable cargo like boats, crated equipment, or machinery. This conveyance service method is a bit more expensive than containers and RoRo shipping due to the use of a crane and the precision involved.

truck traveling with vehicles

Roll-On/Roll-Off

Roll-on/Roll-Off, known as RoRo Car Shipping, is the most inexpensive way to transport heavy equipment or oversized cargo overseas. Since your cargo is wheeled and operable, it will be stored within the ship's hull.

This international haulage car method requires using a ship's ramp and height restrictions depending on the vessel and hull size.

Flat Rack Car Shipping

Flat-rack transportation is the most adaptable when hauling oversized items internationally or in long-distance locations. It is available as a flat rack or a transport container without partition walls, allowing your cargo to be secured to the four corners.

Heavy Cargo and Car Shipping

Your heavy cargo will be secured and then placed on the back of the ship. Since this type of car shipping exposes your load to the elements, you may want to consider your car shipped to Germany while shrink-wrapped.

Container Import/Shipping (Including Cars)

Container hauling is the most preferred shipping method for moving from one location to another. It's easy to see ships stacked high with shipping containers. However, regarding oversized cargo, 40-foot containers may be too small for your purposes.

This is the most expensive and costs high. Also, a secure form of shipping classic cars is available at our company. It will protect your cargo from the outdoor elements while shipping from one location to another. In the case of shared container carriage, you'll exclusively be paying for a single car with no hidden fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to ship a car to Germany from the US?

Shipping a standard car from the US to Germany commonly runs about $1,200-$2,800 for port-to-port ocean transport, while dedicated-container service can reach roughly $2,500-$5,000. RoRo and consolidated containers usually sit toward the lower end, while vehicle size, departure coast, inland pickup, and destination handling can raise the total. Taxes and German destination charges are separate from many advertised ocean-freight rates. A1's international car shipping cost calculator can help you compare the main pricing inputs.

How long does it take to ship a car from the US to Germany?

Car shipping from the US to Germany generally takes about 4-8 weeks from many East Coast routes, while West Coast shipments can take roughly 7-13 weeks when loading, sailing, customs, and final handling are included. Actual ocean time is only part of the schedule. Vessel frequency, export clearance, container consolidation, and the U.S. departure coast account for much of the difference. Schumacher, for example, currently advises allowing six to eight weeks for its full Germany process even though the West Coast ocean leg alone is about four to five weeks.

What is the cheapest way to ship a car to Germany?

Roll-on/roll-off shipping is often the lowest-cost choice for a standard, operable car, although shared-container service can be similarly priced on some U.S.-Germany lanes. RoRo vehicles are driven aboard a specialized ship and secured in the vessel rather than loaded into an individual container. It works best when the vehicle can move under its own power and does not need dedicated enclosed space. A1's RoRo shipping guide explains how the method works and where it fits compared with container service.

What documents are required to ship a car to Germany?

Shipping a used car from the US to Germany normally requires proof of ownership, vehicle identification information, photo identification, and the sale or purchase record when applicable. For U.S. export, CBP requires the VIN and proof of ownership for a used self-propelled vehicle at least 72 hours before export under its vehicle-export rules. A lienholder authorization may also be needed when the title shows an active lien. A1's international vehicle documentation guide covers the paperwork to prepare before the vehicle reaches the export port.

Do I have to pay import taxes when shipping a car to Germany?

As of September 29, 2026, a qualifying vehicle originating in the United States can enter the EU at 0% customs duty under Regulation (EU) 2026/1455, but Germany's standard import VAT remains 19%. The reduced customs rate depends on U.S. origin, not simply on the car being shipped from a U.S. port, so a foreign-built vehicle may fall under a different tariff. Relocation goods can also receive separate relief when the statutory conditions are met. Customs value and the applicable tariff classification determine the final tax calculation.

Can a US-spec car be registered and driven in Germany after it arrives?

A US-spec car can be registered in Germany only after it meets the applicable German registration and technical requirements. For a used vehicle imported from a non-EU country, the German federal service portal lists customs-clearance proof, foreign vehicle documents, liability-insurance confirmation, and a valid technical inspection among the registration requirements. A Certificate of Conformity can simplify registration when one exists; otherwise, additional technical documentation or approval may be required. The exact registration procedure is handled by the competent local vehicle-registration authority in Germany.

Such a great, friendly and helpful company to work with when I needed to ship a car to Germany. Team was awesome, always positive and somehow finds a way to get to yes no matter the situation. We’ve used them for years, and even when I was deployed, my wife handled the shipment without any stress. They took care of everything needed to get the vehicle overseas. It took some time from drop-off to pickup, but everything arrived as expected and in good shape.
