Since Bolivia has no coastline of its own, your vehicle cannot be shipped directly to Bolivia itself, but most likely to a destination port of Arica or Iquique, both ports in Chile, the western neighbor of Bolivia. The shipping company that you contract with will be aware of this and will make the appropriate arrangements.

You will, however, still have to arrange for your vehicle to be somehow transported to the port of departure in the United States, and that will depend on which region of the country you live in. If you live in the east, west, or south, there are many port cities available that your shipper might operate from. If you drive your vehicle to the port of departure, you can save some money on the total cost, otherwise, it must be picked up by your shipper and trucked to the port city.

Then you’ll need to decide whether your vehicle will be shipped using the container method, or via Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO). Shipping via container affords more protection for vehicles but is also more costly. If you share a container with another vehicle, that cost can be reduced somewhat, but it will still not be as inexpensive as RORO shipping.

RORO is not a protected shipping method and calls for the vehicle to be driven on and off the ship under its own power, and it is simply lashed securely to the deck in transit. If you choose this shipping method, you are not allowed to have anything in the vehicle, other than its spare tire and tire jack. You must also have no more than ¼ tank of gas in the car for the journey.

Other Requirements

You will have to be able to demonstrate positive ownership of the vehicle being shipped, usually by means of a bill of sale with your name on it. The title for the car must be clear of any liens unless the lienholder has provided written authorization for you to export this car from the country.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency will also need to see documented proof of registration and your driver license before they will allow the vehicle to be exported. You should contact this agency well ahead of any planned shipment, in case of any hold-ups that may need to be ironed out.

At the destination port, there will be an import duty imposed and the vehicle will have to clear Customs in whichever port it is shipped to. You can contact the Bolivian Embassy in the U.S. for questions about any restrictions on the Bolivian side of the shipment.
