Can I Ship More Than One Vehicle In An Enclosed Trailer?
Can I Ship More Than One Vehicle In An Enclosed Trailer?

Whether you’re moving your car collection, selling or buying multiple vehicles, or you have to ship more than one car for any other reason, you might be wondering if you can ship multiple cars in a single enclosed trailer. Find out in this article from A-1 Auto Transport.

Is It Possible To Ship More Than One Vehicle In An Enclosed Trailer?

Yes. Enclosed trailers can accommodate more than one car. Semi-trailers are usually up to 48 feet in length, so they will be able to handle multiple vehicles. If you want to ship more than one car using an enclosed trailer, this is definitely possible.

In fact, you may find that you can get a discount on your shipping job, compared to having your cars picked up and dropped off separately. It’s definitely a good idea to ship more than one vehicle on the same enclosed auto transport trailer if you’re shipping one, two, or more vehicles and you’re having them all dropped off in the same location.

How Many Vehicles Can Fit Into An Enclosed Trailer?

This depends on the type of trailer. Most enclosed trailers can hold between 3-7 vehicles. Some trailers have only a single deck, while others have a second deck that allows for a second layer of vehicles to be transported, similar to an open-air car carrier.

The size of each vehicle is also important. A Ford F-150, for example, has a wheelbase that can be as long as 13.5 feet, while a Toyota Corolla has a wheelbase of about 9 feet. The longer the vehicle, the fewer cars can be transported in a single enclosed trailer, as you might expect.

The actual size of the cars is typically the limiting factor for enclosed trailers. There are weight limits, too – usually of about 80,000 lbs – but because even the largest trucks rarely exceed 8,000 lbs and only a few vehicles can be fit into an enclosed trailer, this is not usually a major consideration.

Does It Cost More To Ship Cars In An Enclosed Trailer?

Yes. Because enclosed trailers cannot carry as many cars as open air trailers, the cost is higher. On average, it will cost 40-50% more per mile to have your cars transported using an enclosed trailer compared to an open-air car carrier. Prices usually start at around $1 per mile for short trips, while longer trips have a lower per-mile rate.

If you’re shipping multiple cars in the same trailer, there are some other factors that may increase or decrease the cost of shipping your vehicles, such as:

  • The size of each car – The more space your vehicle takes up inside an enclosed carrier, the more you’ll pay, in most cases. This is because larger cars and trucks may reduce the total number of vehicles that can be shipped in each trailer. As mentioned in the previous section, the length of each vehicle is usually the most important factor.
  • Pickup and dropoff destinations – Enclosed trailer shipping is the cheapest when you have all of your cars picked up and dropped off at the same destinations. However, if you need to have your vehicles picked up or dropped off at multiple locations, the cost of shipping will be higher, since there will be more driving and labor involved in the process
  • Required shipment time – If you need your cars to reach their destination by a particular time or you have a last-minute job, the price of shipping will be a lot higher. But if your schedule is a bit more flexible, you’ll usually be able to save some money when hiring a transport company for enclosed trailer shipping.
  • Time of the year – Even the time of year can influence the cost of shipping your vehicles in an enclosed trailer. The availability of enclosed trailers is actually lower during the winter and early spring, when inclement weather like snow is more common in most of the United States, so you may pay more during these times, or have to wait longer to ship your vehicle.

How Can I Get A Quote For Enclosed Trailer Shipping?

The best way is to contact a shipping broker like A-1 Auto Transport. We can provide you with a quote from multiple companies in your area right away, and ensure that you get a market-leading rate for shipping your vehicles.

You can also do your own research and find auto shipping companies near you that offer enclosed trailer shipping, and contact each one individually. However, this is usually more time-consuming compared to working with a shipping broker.
