Process of Bangladesh Vehicle Registration | A-1 Auto Transport
Before you consider think about registering a car in Bangladesh, consider that the country’s traffic travels on the left side of the road. This is important to consider as general international guidelines prescribe cars with steering wheels closest to the median of the road.
That said, here are the steps needed to register your vehicle in Bangladesh.
The Process
All cars must be registered with the Bangladesh Road Transportation Association, typically shortened to BRTA. Here’s a quick list of the documents needed to register a car with the BRTA.
- A registration application
- Your taxpayer identification number certificate
- A copy of your national identification card
- 4-8 passport-sized photos
As with any registration, the car must be registered to the area where the owner resides (or area where the vehicle conducts business). Now, registration can only be done in person at the local BRTA office.
Inspection
After receiving and processing the registration, the vehicle needs to be brought to the BRTA for an inspection. Upon passing, the vehicle’s data and owner information will be entered into the BRTA Information System.
Various fees come with registration, including an income tax fee, a registration fee and a fitness fee. The income tax and registration fees vary depending on the size and type of vehicle. The registration fee typically varies from 700 to 300 Bangladeshi takas ($9-$38 U.S. dollars).

Bangladesh Licensing, Driving Tips & Resources
Licensing
The BRTA requires drivers to have a learner’s license as a prerequisite to getting a driver’s license. The learning license grants the recipient 2-3 months to learn to drive before testing their practical and written knowledge. The minimum age requirement to receive a license is 18 years of age. In addition, drivers must also pass a medical exam before it all begins.
Bangladesh Driving Tips
It’s recommended that those who drive in Bangladesh be seasoned international drivers as the roads and regulations are unforgiving. Urban areas like the capital Dhaka are flooded with vehicles, humans and animals. Road conditions and safety are poor, with speeding and lack of signage being a major problem.
Driving at night is not recommended as many vehicles will be unlit on the road and streetlights are not common in the country.
As expected, most of the nation’s drivers are unlicensed and aggressive on the road. Vehicles running red lights are common, merging without stopping and without letting off their car horn. Head-on collisions between vehicles are common and it’s recommended that one travels with an experienced local driver.
