Types of Dump Trucks
Transporting dump trucks successfully requires an understanding of the specific equipment you are dealing with for the purposes of safe handling. Here are the common types of dump trucks and their important features.
Standard dump trucks
The standard dump truck has its dump body mounted to the frame and a bed raised by a vertical hydraulic ram mounted under the front of the body. A typical standard dump truck has swing-out doors and a metering fate in the center. It also has a small wheelbase that make it more maneuverable than higher-capacity semi-trailer dump trucks or articulated dump trucks.
It can also be raised by a horizontal hydraulic ram and lever arrangements between its frame rails. The back of the bed is hinged at the back of the truck. It is designed such that the tailgate can be configured to swing up on top hinges or configured in the "High Lift Tailgate format". This arrangement is such that the hydraulic or pneumatic rams lift the gate open and above the dump body.
Standard dump trucks have axles that vary from two for the smallest to seven axles for the largest type which is called "centipede". The best method of shipping standard dump trucks is using flatbed trailers.
Side dump trucks
A side dump truck is a 3-axle tractor pulling a 2-axle semi-trailer. It's operated by hydraulic rams that tilt the dump body onto its side. The design allows for rapid unloading and increased load-bearing capacity.
Because of its size side dump truck hauling cannot be done using a flatbed. A side dump truck transport company would use a removable gooseneck (RGN) trailer or lowboy.
Transfer Dump Trucks
This is a standard dump truck that pulls a separate trailer that has a movable cargo container. The aggregate container has a motor that is either electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic powered. Many dump truck transport services also prefer to use the RGN trailers or low-boy trailer for this type.

How to Prepare a Dump Truck for Transport
One of the most important things you can do in preparation for the truck's shipping process is make sure it's in its best condition. If the dump truck isn't brand new, there will be some things you should do to make sure that the truck and those transporting it are kept safe.
- Clean all dirt and debris off the dump truck. Make sure the interior is also clean.
- Remove any personal items out of the dump truck. This includes anything not manufactured with the vehicle.
- Check all fluids and top them off, even have the dump truck was taken to the shop for a tune up and regular maintenance. The only fluid that should remain under ¼ full is the fuel.
- Take pictures of the vehicle from all sides. Write down any visible markings or damages the dump truck might suffer from. You can refer to these notes while performing your final inspection once the truck is delivered.
It goes without saying that you should only consult qualified transport companies with experience transporting heavy construction equipment.
