Early in the 20th Century, Port Said was one of the two major ports of interaction for travelers throughout the world. The world famous writer Rudyard Kipling wrote: "If you truly wish to find someone you have known and who travels, there are two points on the globe you have but to sit and wait, sooner or later your man will come there: the docks of London and Port Said." When you’re ready to have your vehicle shipped to Port Said it will be an easy task once you hire the services of an international automobile transport company. International shipping companies work with shipping vehicles globally every day and your personal agent will be able to assist you with their knowledge of the shipping process, the ways to ship and the paperwork that will be required for both the shipping company and for customs officials once your vehicle reaches Port Said. The transport company will need the following important documents from you as they are setting up your shipping request:
- Driver’s License or Photo Identification
- Vehicle Title
- Vehicle Insurance Certificate
- Power of Attorney Statement
- Social Security Number
Your agent will also be able to let you know what types of paperwork will be necessary for customs officials when your car reaches Port Said, Egypt. The following paperwork is the basic paperwork that will be necessary. You may contact your agent or the Embassy of Egypt in Washington, DC for further information on mandatory customs paperwork as well.
Foreign Travelers Entering Port Said
If you are a foreign traveler relocating to Port Said you will need to provide customs with your Passport as well as a Visa showing at least 3 months residency permit. You’ll have to have your Airway and Seaway Bill and an authorization letter to handle the car for shipping. You will also need your car title and the bill of sale that shows you have owned the car for one year or less.
Citizens of Port Said
You will need your passport and it must be stamped within six months of importation of the car to Port Said. You also need your shipping bills and a handling authorization letter. Your car title and bill of sale must show your name and it must also show that the car was purchased in the last year prior to importing to Port Said.
Diplomats in Port Said
You will need your passport as well as an Egyptian Diplomatic ID. You will need to get a Clearing Letter that can be obtained from the Egypt Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
All vehicles whether new or used are subject to pay taxes and import duties. Foreigners who are working for the Egyptian Government or who own their own business in Egypt may apply for a duty exemption permit for their vehicle. Please be aware that if your vehicle is exempted from paying import duties you will only be allowed to have the vehicle in Port Said for six months and will have to export it back to the United States at the end of the six months. Also, it is advisable to ship your vehicle and your personal materials separately due to the fact that it can take several days longer to process and clear a vehicle through customs than it will take for personal material to process and clear.
Methods of International Shipping
Ro-Ro Shipping has been one of the most popular ways to ship a vehicle overseas for many years and is used daily around the globe for importing and exporting vehicles of all types. While Ro-Ro is the simplest as well as the quickest choice for international shipping, it only allows the vehicle to be shipped but does not allow for personal material to be present inside of the vehicle during transport. Your agent will let you know what preparations you will need to make for your vehicle if you ship with Ro-Ro.
Shipping your vehicle in a container provides some extra comfort in knowing that your vehicle is protected from the elements of the sea air and water while being transported internationally. Many people who transport classic cars will often choose to ship in a container for safety and insurance reasons. You can also purchase a container to have your personal material shipped to Port Said as well.
