The second-largest city of Congo, Lubumbashi is a hub of mining industry and some of the biggest mining companies have a headquarters here. If you are coming to stay on a long term basis, or are a returning citizen or plan on staying for a couple of years, importing your vehicle from USA makes sense.
With poor public transportation and communication issues that you might face, having your own vehicle will give you the freedom of movement.
Hiring the services of international shipping services such as A1 Auto Transport service can be beneficial as we understand all aspects of working with the Democratic Republic of Congo Customs and will ensure that your vehicle clears the procedures quickly.
Specific import requirements in Congo.
The regulations of Congo don’t allow any vehicle over the age of 10 years to be imported into the country. It is essential that all vehicles and cars being imported are left hand driven and those that have 10 or more seats need to be less than 7 years old.
If you need more information on the taxes as applicable on imported vehicles, you need to know that there is standard tax of 22.5% under the Import Declaration Fee, which is applicable on all new and used vehicles. The total amount varies as per the evaluated value of the vehicle. Additionally, there are custom and excise taxes based on the cost of freight charges, value of the vehicle and insurance on it. These are usually 8% - 46% while additional VAT is 8% - 13% is charged on all imported vehicles. One of our shipping agents will be happy to assist you through the custom calculation for your shipping requirements.
As with any vehicle import internationally, there are many procedures and documentation that has to be completed. Although A1 Auto Transport service is with you at every step, it is essential that you submit all of the documents so that we can submit it at least 72 hours before to the U.S Customs and Border Protection and at the Congolese Customs Department. These include:
- Inspection and emission certificate.
- Vehicle title and registration documents.
- Ownership proof.
- Receipts of taxes.
- Bill of Lading.
- Vehicle insurance.
Ways of transporting the vehicle.
Though freight shipping is the only option, apart from air transportation, you have a choice of opting for Container shipping or RORO. If you need to ship an empty car at the cheapest possible prices, opt for RORO but if you have an expensive car and other personal belongings that need to be transported to Congo, it is best to pay for container shipping.
The Port of Matadi accepts both RORO and Container shipping but you will need to be present when the shipment arrives. If you cannot be there, give a signed Power of Attorney to A1 Auto Transport service and we will complete the legal formalities.
