Bangladesh Vehicle Registration Process Made Simple

Process of Bangladesh Vehicle Registration | A-1 Auto Transport

Before registering a car in Bangladesh, remember that the country's traffic travels on the left side of the road. General international guidelines prescribe vehicles with steering wheels closest to the road's median.

Vehicle Inspection and Registration Process

The Process

All cars must be registered with the East Pakistan Road Transportation Association, typically shortened to BRTA. Here's a quick list of the documents needed to register a vehicle with the BRTA.

  • A listing application
  • Your taxpayer identification number certificate
  • A copy of your national identification card
  • 4-8 passport-sized photos

As with any listing, the car must be registered where the owner resides (or the area where the vehicle conducts business). Now, listing can only be done in person at the local BRTA office.

Vehicle Inspection

Once you've gathered all necessary documents, follow these steps:

  1. Application Submission: Submit the completed application form and all required documents to your local BRTA office.
  2. Fee Payment: You'll receive an assessment slip detailing the fees after document verification. Pay the required fees at the designated bank.
  3. Vehicle Inspection: Bring your vehicle to the BRTA office for a physical inspection. Inspectors will verify the engine and chassis numbers and assess the vehicle's overall condition.
  4. Data Entry and Approval: Post-inspection, your vehicle's details will be entered into the BRTA Information System. The Assistant Director (Engineering) will review and approve the registration.
  5. Biometric Data Collection: You'll receive an SMS notification to provide biometric data (digital photo, signature, and fingerprints) for the Digital Registration Certificate (DRC).
  6. Issuance of Registration Certificate and License Plates: After completing all steps, you'll receive the DRC and retro-reflective number plates.

Inspection

After receiving and processing the registration, the vehicle must be brought to the BRTA for an inspection. Upon passing, the vehicle's data and owner information will be entered into the BRTA Information System.

The application includes various fees, including an income tax fee, a registration fee, and a fitness fee. The income tax and registration fees vary depending on the size and type of vehicle. The registration fee typically ranges from 700 to 300 Bangladeshi takas ($9-$38 U.S. dollars).

Required Documents for Vehicle Registration

To register your vehicle with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), you'll need to provide the following documents:

  • Proof of Ownership: This includes the original purchase receipt or invoice, import documents (if applicable), and a sales certificate.
  • Tax Identification Number (TIN) Certificate: Issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
  • National ID or Passport: A copy of your national identification card or passport.
  • Passport-sized Photographs: Typically 4-8 recent photos.
  • Insurance Certificate: Proof of valid vehicle insurance coverage.
  • Tax Clearance Certificate: Evidence that all applicable taxes have been paid.
  • Pollution Control Certificate: Issued after the vehicle passes an emissions test.
  • Fitness Certificate: Confirms the car meets safety standards.

It's important to note that registration must be completed in person at the local BRTA office in your area of residence or business.

East Pakistan Licensing, Driving Tips & Resources

a car icon featuring a checklist symbol

Licensing

The BRTA requires drivers to have a learner's license as a prerequisite to getting a driver's license. The learning license grants the recipient 2-3 months to learn to drive before testing their practical and written knowledge. The minimum age requirement to receive a permit is 18. In addition, drivers must also pass a medical exam before it all begins.

Local Area Driving Tips

It's recommended that those who drive in the area be seasoned international drivers, as the roads and regulations are unforgiving. Urban areas like Dhaka's capital, are flooded with vehicles, humans, and animals. Road conditions and safety are poor, with speeding and a lack of signage being a significant problem.

Driving at night is not recommended as many vehicles will be unlit on the road, and streetlights are uncommon in the country.

As expected, most of the nation is unlicensed and aggressive on the road. Vehicles running red lights are standard, merging without stopping or letting off their horns. Head-on collisions between vehicles are common, and it's recommended that one travels with an experienced local driver.

Registration Fees and Taxes

The cost of vehicle registration in Bangladesh varies based on several factors:

  • Registration Fee: Depending on the vehicle's engine capacity, it ranges from approximately BDT 15,000 to BDT 200,000 or more.
  • Advance Income Tax (AIT): Applicable at registration and fitness renewal time, varying with engine capacity.
  • Annual Tax Token Fee: An annual fee that depends on the vehicle's engine capacity.
  • Fitness Certificate Fee: Depending on the vehicle type and engine capacity, it typically ranges from BDT 450 to BDT 2,000.
  • Import Duties and VAT: If importing a vehicle, be prepared to pay customs duties, supplementary duties, VAT, and other applicable taxes, which can significantly increase the overall cost.

You can use the BRTA's online fee calculator for precise fee calculations:

Renewal and Ownership Transfer

Vehicle registrations in Bangladesh are typically valid for up to 5 years. To renew your registration:

  • Submit Required Documents: Include the fitness certificate, pollution control certificate, insurance certificate, tax clearance certificate, and identification documents.
  • Pay Renewal Fees: As specified by the BRTA.

In case of ownership transfer:

  • Provide Necessary Documents: The original registration certificate, proof of sale, tax clearance certificate, pollution control certificate, fitness certificate, and identification documents of both parties.
  • Submit Application: To the BRTA along with the required documents and fees.

The BRTA will issue a new registration certificate and license plates in the new owner's name.

We chose to ship one of our cars ahead of a move, and it couldn't have gone better. The driver was easy to work with, and both the pickup and delivery went without a hitch. Based on how smoothly it all went, I’d recommend them for anyone needing vehicle prep for international registration.
