Where is Sitka?
Sitka is a city-borough on the southeastern tip of Alaska on Baranof Island, facing the Pacific Ocean. Sitka has been inhabited for over 50 centuries by the Tlingit Indians. It became a Russian city called New Archangel in 1799 but in 1867, Sitka was purchased by the United States of America from Russia. All these three unique cultures: Tlingit, Russian, and American, continue to thrive together in Sitka. Today, Sitka presents a post-card pretty picture of a quaint multi-cultural lived-in place.
Nature Trails
All visitors and residents of Sitka are overwhelmed by the grandeur of its natural bounties. Blessed with a mild, cold climate, Sitka presents a majestic view of the Pacific Ocean from its mountains lined with spruce and hemlock trees. The ancient snow-capped dormant volcano, Mt. Edgecumbe stands guard off the southern end. Topping the list of wildlife viewing is the American Bald Eagle that can be seen swooping down the Sitka Sound as well as Sitka’s black-tailed deer and the brown bear still living in the forests. Humpback whales can be seen bobbing in and out of the water, together with sea lions, sea otters, spawning salmon, and other marine animals.
Cultural Experiences
Once referred to as the “Paris of the Pacific,” the cultures from Sitka’s historical past continue to live. Numerous galleries and totem parks abound where Tlingit artisans continue to share their people’s stories. The Russian Orthodox Church, St Michael’s Cathedral, continue to be a focal skyline feature with its unique onion dome. A thriving gastronomic fusion of restaurants continues to surprise diners with culinary innovations with games.
