Features of Port of Brownsville
The Port of Brownsville happens to be the largest land-owning public port in the entire US, with approximately 40,000 acres. With about 35% of its surface developed through port facilities, it offers one of the biggest service bays of any port in the US. As a result, the port is able to handle several dozen cargo ships and several million tons of cargo on its dock.
The port is linked to the Gulf of Mexico by the Brownsville ship channel that offers deep waters, currently at a depth of 42 feet. The ship channel provides a turning bay of 36 feet in depth and 1,200 feet in width. These dimensions are large enough to handle mega-sized cargo ships close to the dock. This is a huge advantage for shipping cars to or from Port of Brownsville as larger cargo ships from major international ports across the globe can comfortably dock on the loading zone of the port, eliminating the need for floating cranes. Just recently, the Port received the green light from Congress to deepen its channel by an extra 10 feet.
The port of Brownsville offers state-of-the-art facilities for efficient day to day running of port activities. It has well over 1 million sq. ft. of covered storage and well over 3 million sq. ft. of open storage. This is advantageous for shipping cars to or from Port of Brownsville because vehicles awaiting shipment from the port and those that have arrived at the port from overseas locations can be stored safely in any of these storage facilities.
The port also has 5 liquid cargo docks and 13 solid cargo docks. The cargo docks offer car shipping services for mass shipments. The docks can handle several thousand cars at one go, offering both Ro-Ro and containerized car shipping services. Thanks to its facilities and services, the Port of Brownsville ranks at number 72 on the list of the highest trading ports in the US. And we can help you ship through here!
