Importing & Registering A Vehicle In New Zealand: Process and Procedures

This page will explain the process of registering an imported vehicle in New Zealand, including the steps you’ll need to take and the documents you’ll need to have. Before we discuss registering a vehicle, it’s important to note that foreign visitors can bring a personal vehicle into the country without having to register it for a period of one year. The vehicle must have current registration status in the home country to qualify for the temporary registration exemption.

Entry Certification

Before a vehicle can be registered in New Zealand, it must first be granted entry certification. In order to receive certification, the vehicle must be taken to a testing center where it is checked to ensure it meets safety and emissions standards. Inspections can be carried out by the local Automobile Association or any number of other inspection centers in the country. Once entry certification has been completed, you can apply for registration.

Registration Process

Upon passing entry certification, you’ll receive the MR2A form, which is essentially your application for registration. (More information about the form can be found under the resources section at the bottom of this page.)

After filling out the MR2A form, you’ll have to present your ID and your application will be processed. After approval, you’ll receive your license plates and you’re ready to go!

Car Insurance & Imported Vehicle Requirements In New Zealand

Unlike many other countries, car insurance is not required in New Zealand in order to operate a motor vehicle. In spite of this, most New Zealanders do have auto insurance at the rate of countries that do require it. Even if it’s not mandatory, it can still be problematic if you get into an accident that’s your fault and don’t have insurance. You are still responsible for damages you cause whether you’re insured or not.

Vehicles in New Zealand are right-hand drive, which means that the steering wheel must be on the opposite side of U.S. vehicles. With the steering wheel on the right side of the vehicle, they also drive on the left side of the road. Vehicles brought into the country must also meet emissions and roadworthiness standards, as well as other safety metrics. There are exceptions made for vehicles that have not been manufactured in the past 20 years.

Satisfied Customers

“The Mazda which my dad bought me last year was delivered to Nebraska right on time! My dad in New Jersey has been asking me to check on it every day, but I told him I’m receiving status updates. He was extra careful since he had a lot of issues with his previous car carrier service provider. When I checked my Mazda upon arrival, it was all good. Cannot really complain. My dad was also really happy everything went well.”

“I contacted A1 Auto Transport in November of 2017 and scheduled for my car to be picked up on the 15th or sooner if possible. Joe called me on the 8th and said he could arrange for a truck to pick it up on 13th. According to his calculations, it should have arrived at its destination in Texas within 4-6 days. The company kept its word and my car was picked up on the 13th. The driver followed procedure and inspected it before loading it. I offered him a tip and he refused. To my surprise, he said he’d try to get the car to Texas in around 3 days, 4 maximum. On the morning of the 4th day, it had arrived. My son got a call from them a day early notifying us of the arrival date and estimated time.  At 3 pm, we got it back without a scratch. I’ve heard lots of stories of “the dangers of auto shipping” and of numerous scams, but A1 Auto Transport proved to be different. There are still honest, capable, and professional companies out there. You just have to choose carefully.”

“I called Joe a couple times, but he did not answer. 15 minutes later he returned my call apologizing and explaining he was speaking to another client. I asked him a few questions and requested a quote. While waiting for it, I called 2 more companies, so I’d have more options. The quote arrived by email a short time afterwards with a lot of details which convinced me we were speaking the same language. Because of this, I choose them to ship my Honda to Arkansas. Although one of the other quotes was $100 cheaper, the company seemed less reliable, and I didn’t want to risk it. A1 Auto Transport did a flawless job moving my baby, and from beginning to end, I had no complaints. It arrived a few hours earlier than promised in the exact condition I left it.”

“I had to get my daughter’s new Honda to South Dakota, so she wouldn’t have to drive it herself. I trust her driving skills, but not out of the city. I’m glad Joe was available to help. He promised to handle it with the utmost care and at a good price. The very next day, a truck arrived to take it. I could finally rest easy. By the time my daughter knew what was going on, it was already on its way. Thanks Joe! A1 Auto Transport is a truly reliable company. I’ll call again if I ever need to.”

“It’s been a few months now since I’ve moved to Florida from Illinois after my career took a nice turn. I had to relocate for a new job, and let me tell you, moving isn’t my favourite thing in the world. All the planning and packing and calling people up to help you move a mountain of personal stuff across states have me doubting my capacity as an adult to handle pressure and endure stress. I don’t think anyone like me with a busy enough life juggling university and a demanding career would ever say moving is an exciting activity. That’s why I’ll be forever thankful to A1 Auto Transport for making my life a hell of a lot easier during the move. I’d never had to worry about rearranging my schedule because of some hang-ups or delays, or getting screwed over for a costly service that damaged both my pocket and my car. It made me think of all those horror stories of people who ran into some bad luck with transporters damaging their most prized possessions after waiting for days on end with hundreds of dollars wasted. I felt really relieved that I didn’t become one of those people when I opted to go with A1 Auto Transport. Along with relocating to Florida for a cool job offer, working with A1 was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made.”
