While most concept cars never see a final product or release to the general public, they can still help predict what cars will look like in the future. Below are the Top 10 Concept Cars that are shaping how humans interact with vehicles and their evolving impact on the environment.
1. Aston Martin DBX.
The Aston Martin DBX is made from machined billet aluminum that is finished with Black Pearl Chromium, a unique paint finish that was created to mimic the look of a black pearl.
On the inside, the DBX does not contain an engine compartment due to its all-electric engine (powered by lithium sulphur cells). This is a beautiful new look for Aston Martin, and serves as a harbinger of things to come for the U.K. auto company.
2. Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6.
The Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 is fitted with a V6 but the production version is slated to hold a twin-turbo V8, making it one of the fastest cars ever produced by Bentley. The muscular, athletic body represents a bold new future for Bentley, and the luxurious cabin will set the tone for its future models.
3. Chevrolet Bolt EV.
While the Chevy Bolt is not new, the all-electric Bolt EV is helping one of America’s strongest auto brands keep pace with the likes of Tesla and Prius. With an estimated range of 200 miles, and recharging time of 9 hours, the Bolt EV positions Chevrolet well to compete in the all-electric space for years to come.
4. Hyundai Santa Cruz.
The Hyundai Santa Cruz is one of the auto company’s boldest moves to date, reinventing the typical look of the midsize pickup. The Santa Cruz has a unibody design and a diesel engine, which easily makes it the most unique looking pickup truck on the market today.
5. Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4.
Luxury and performance is nothing new for Lamborghini, but the Asterion LPI 910-4 takes this to a whole new level. The body is made of aluminum and carbon fiber, and the motor is comprised of a V-10 aspirated hybrid engine. Put this together, and you get a car with a lighter footprint than its brothers and sisters, but still reaches a top speed of almost 200 miles per hour.
6. Lincoln Continental.
The all-new Lincoln Continental is not your grandpa’s retirement car. The new Continental brings the first convertible to the historic
American brand, and with its V-6 engine, 19 speaker audio system, and built-in champagne cooler, it certainly is positioned to turn some heads on the road.
7. Mercendes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion.
Of all the cars on our list, the Mercedes-Benz F 015 may be the most futuristic car of the bunch. The car is slated to have both manual and autonomous driving systems, with seating that allows for face-to-face configuration, and 6 display screens in case you ever need something like that. Don’t expect to see this car on the road any time soon, but when it does, you’ll know the future has arrived.
8. Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV.
The new Concept GC-PHEV from Mitsubishi is arguably the most interesting SUV on this list. This hybrid-electric crossover is meant to correct the blunder of abandoning the Montero sport-utility line that was a huge success over the past two decades. Despite its hybrid engine, the GC-PHEV to boasts a 335 HP supercharged 3.0 liter V-6 engine that is more than capable of hauling your family across the country.
9. Yamaha Sports Ride Concept.
For the first time in many years, Yamaha is turning the heads of car enthusiasts with the reveal of its Sports Ride Concept vehicle. The carbon-chassis weighs in at a meager 1,600 lbs and means that whatever the final engine looks like in this car, it’s going to be FAST.
10. Toyota S-FR.
The Toyota S-FR is a new racing concept revealed at the 2016 Tokyo Auto Salon, and is more a concept of a concept. But, what we do know so far is that the S-FR is a successor to the Toyota Sport 800 of the 1960s, and could signal Toyota’s racing vision for the next decade.
11. Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo.
With the Vision Gran Turismo, Bugatti has produced one of the most beautiful racing cars in the world (again). Easily topping 250 MPH, the carbon fiber W16 engine cements the Gran Turismo as the hyper-racer of the future.
12. McLaren MP4-X.
Not to be outdone, McLaren has created their own Formula 1 concept in the MP4-X concept. The MP4-X intricately weaves speed, excitement, and performance into one of the most powerful racing vehicles in the world.
13. Mercedes Concept IAA.
Mercedes has also beautifully capture the future of autos in the Concept IAA. This 4-door coupe automatically converts into hyper-aerodynamic mode when surpassing 80 km/hr, and is fully digitized from form to function.
14. Mazda RX-Vision.
Though not usually a brand associated with concept cars, Mazda recently debuted the RX-Vision to show the world what the future of the brand might be. The RX-Vision has a Skyactiv-R rotary engine, capable of blowing away the performance of any of its current cars on the market today.
15. Porsche Mission E.
In its own “tribute to tomorrow”, Porsche has designed an incredible concept car in the Mission E. The Mission E has specs of over 600 HP, capable of reaching over 250 km/hr on a charge of over 300 miles. With a charging time of less than an hour, this is Porsche most promising electric concept to date.
16. Honda Project 2&4.
The Honda Project 2&4 may be the most unique looking vehicle on our list of Top 20 Concept Cars of 2016. The admittedly minimalist and downsized vehicle isn’t meant to transport large quantities of people, but it was designed by over 80 engineers with the goal of creating a half-bike, half-car that would turn heads. And it certainly succeeded in doing that.
17. Buick Avenir.
In its ongoing mission of building relevance with Americans under the age of 60, Buick has built the Avenir to act as a liaison for the technological future of the brand. The V-6 engine, 12-inch color touch screen, and 4G LTE hotspot capability help increase the brand’s appeal to the country’s youngest driving demographics.
18. Bentley Grand Convertible.
Bentley has outdone itself with its newest concept in the Grand Convertible. The new Bentley concept was built with a twin-turbo pushrod 530HP engine, and is more than capable of shuttling the world’s richest people speedily along to their destinations.
19. Infiniti Q60.
The new Infiniti Q60 Coupe comes in two flavors—the 3.0 liter twin turbo VR V-6 with over 400 horsepower, and a 2.0 liter turbo for your less aggressive brother. Either way, Infiniti has produced its next generation of sportscar with this model.
20. Kia Trail’ster.
The final concept car on our list gives us subtle reminders of the Toyota FJ Cruiser. Meant to appeal to the most active Americans, the Kia Trail’ster is a half-sedan, half-crossover SUV that can carry your snowboards (if not all of your friends). With a 1.6-liter turbo engine that puts out 185HP, it’s more than capable of getting you up and down the mountain.
