If you’re a new rider, or buying a dirt bike for someone who is, there a number of things you need to keep in mind to safely transition into off road riding. The first and most important concern has to do with the power of the bike. This mistake many first-timers make is choosing a bike that is too powerful for them to handle, which can cause serious safety concerns. With that in mind, here are some of the best dirt bikes for those who are newcomers.
Yamaha TTR125
A small and affordable bike, the Yamaha TTR125 is perfect for beginners. It’s small enough that younger riders can handle it, but with a large enough wheel base that it’s just fine for adults as well. In addition to being relatively cheap, they’re also easy to find on the used market in all four models because it’s such a popular beginner bike. Because it’s such a popular bike, it’s also easy to find replacement parts for if anything requires fixing. As mentioned above, it is a small bike, so may not be suitable for taller riders, but it’s ideal for small adults and younger riders that need a starter bike to learn on.
Kawasaki KX100
Another motocross bike on the smaller side, the Kawaski KX100 is great for beginners. Like the Yamaha TTR125, it also has larger wheels so it’s workable for smaller body types and fairly easy to handle. For younger riders, small adults, and most women, the Kawasaki is a great choice since it has a low seat and doesn’t require a ton of strength to handle. The clutch isn’t as easy to learn on as the TTR125 so there is a learning curve there, but if you plan on upgrading down the line at some point, it’s a good place to start.

Honda XR250
An older bike that’s no longer made, the Honda XR250 is still a great beginner dirt bike. One thing you should keep in mind for new riders is that older doesn’t necessarily mean that the tech or performance will lag far behind more current models. It’s bigger and more powerful than the two bikes listed previously so it’s more suited to full size adults. For smaller or younger riders, the XR200 may be a better choice, but both are extremely reliable bikes. The XR250 is not as light as some other bikes, so the smaller model may be preferred if that’s a concern. As an older bike, it’s not as easy to find parts for as some others, but there are still plenty of them out there.

Suzuki DRZ125
Another great and affordable starter bike, the Suzuki DRZ125 is also best suited to smaller adults and younger riders. While certainly not a high-performance dirt bike, it’s a good starting point for the inexperienced rider since it provides a safe, comfortable experience that helps newcomers get acclimated. It provides a smooth ride with a clutch that’s easy to operate so there aren’t a lot of challenges there, but it does require kick-starting which can be difficult for some beginners, but it can also be easily modified to make it easier to start.
