This process is known as homogenization as all vehicles need to adhere to the stringent EU emission laws.

Key Considerations About Auto Import
A vehicle can be imported into Hungary duty free, if the vehicle has a catalysator, or catalytic converter, even if it is on a temporary basis. However, it is important that you have a valid Hungarian Residence Permit because tourists or those without that permit are not allowed to import a car.
However as per the rules, vehicles coming into Hungary should be newer. Additionally, a vehicle has to be less than four years old. If a vehicle is older than four years, they will need to pass an environmental examination. You will be responsible for the cost of that test. If necessary, you may need to do some degree of technical modifications in order for your vehicle to pass through. Once the vehicle passes the emissions test, and is cleared by the Customs, you will be given a registration number from Hungary to assist you further.
Essential Paperwork Needed
You will need to fill out and return the right paperwork in order to avoid any delays. These documents you will need include:
- Hungarian power of attorney
- Invoice of the vehicle which is signed by the owner
- Identification documents- work or residence visa
- Liability insurance
- Bill of Lading
- Bank guarantee
- Original car registration
- A copy of your U.S. driving license
All paperwork has to be submitted to the U.S Customs and Border Protection and then it will be scrutinized by the Hungarian Customs Authority, before the car will be arrive in the port and cleared for delivery. You have the option of selecting RORO or container shipping when you ship it from U.S to Hungary.
Receiving the Vehicle in Szolnok
Since Hungary is a land-locked country in Europe, you will need to ship your vehicle to the closest port in Croatia. Once your vehicle arrives at the port, you will then need it transported to land. If you are unable to be at the port when your vehicle arrives, you will need to send a power of attorney for one of our agents and they complete the formalities at the port, for you instead.
There are guidelines that must be followed when shipping a vehicle. While it may take more effort to ship your vehicle through all these steps, it must be done. You can contact the Hungarian Consulate in USA for current information on import taxes and laws.
