About the Port of Salem, New Jersey
The port of Salem is a shallow-draft port located on the eastern shores of New Jersey. The port is strategically located about 2 miles shy of the Delaware Bay, right on the Salem River cut-off. It is conveniently located to offer efficient port services to the United States as it is only 54 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Sea transport is considered the best means for transporting bulk, break bulk, and Ro-Ro cargo to and from overseas destinations. The closest port on the designated seaway that offers convenience in reaching the closest major markets is best preferred. As such, the proximity of this port to the Atlantic Ocean greatly facilitates shipping cars to or from Port of Salem, New Jersey.
The port is considered a shallow draft port in comparison to other ports. It can, however, handle huge amounts of heavy tonnage cargo. The port offers an anchorage depth of 9.4m – 10m and a cargo pier depth of 18.6m – 19.8m. These features are convenient enough to allow cargo vessels stretching an entire 500m in length to dock right on the loading area. The space facilitates efficient loading and offloading of the vehicles during export and imports respectively.
The Port of Salem, New Jersey, is jointly run and managed by the Salem Municipal Port Authority and the South Jersey Port Corporation. The management body was established in June 12, 1982, to oversee the high port traffic it received, just around the same time the port was re-designated as a port of entry and later a foreign trade zone.
Port of Salem, New Jersey terminals
The port of Salem offers several terminals for handling its high cargo traffic. This is thanks to its entry point and foreign exchange zone status. The South Jersey Port Corporation operates three terminals at the Port of Paulsboro, Port of Camden and the Port of Salem terminals. The three ports have been publicly operated by the Salem Municipal Wharf and privately owned by the Salem Terminal Ltd.
A-1 Auto Transport Inc. works through these bodies when shipping cars to or from Port of Salem, New Jersey through the Salem terminal. The terminal offers a berth-side truck access of 350 feet which allows containerized vehicles shipped by trucks to be driven up to the mouth of the loading zone. The terminal also offers an 8,000 square feet covered shed warehouse for safe storage of the vehicles.
