Do Moving Trucks Have To Stop At Weigh Stations?

While not the case in most instances, you may be surprised to find that there are circumstances under which a moving truck does, in fact, have to stop at weigh stations. While the laws vary slightly from state to state, the general rule of thumb is that any vehicle with a (gross) weight of 10,000 pounds or more must stop at weigh stations. While there are some exceptions to this rule, it does apply to moving trucks, including rented trucks you drive yourself.

How Much Do Moving Trucks Weigh?

The odds are pretty low that your furniture and other belongings weigh anything near 10,000 pounds but remember that it’s the combined weight of your belongings, plus the weight of the vehicle itself that make up the total weight. Most moving trucks weigh between 8,000 and 26,000 pounds, though this largely depends on the length with 10 foot trucks on the lighter side and 26 foot trucks on the heavier end. Most rented moving trucks will have the weigh station requirements listed on the truck itself, so you should consult the information if it’s a concern.

Why Are There Weight Limits For Vehicles?

Weight limits for vehicles, especially commercial vehicles, are in place mainly for safety reasons. A truck carrying too heavy of a load is a risk for the driver and other drivers on the road. Trucks beyond a certain weight threshold can be hard to control effectively and can be very dangerous in bad weather conditions. Additionally, an overloaded truck has a higher chance of blowing a tire, which can cause the driver to lose control and cause an accident, not to mention that braking distances are greatly increased with heavier loads.

What Happens If You Miss or Skip A Weigh Station?

There are fines associated with skipping a weigh station if you’re supposed to stop. The standard fine is typically $300, but the penalty can be much more severe if driving an overloaded truck due to the safety risks mentioned above. The specific penalties vary by state, but they’re usually based on poundage over the limit and can easily run into tens of thousands of dollars, which the driver is responsible for paying. If you’re caught having skipped a station, even several miles down the line, you will most likely be instructed to turn around and get weighed up in addition to any penalties.

Other Duties Performed At Weigh Stations

Besides just weighing the vehicle to make sure it falls under the limit, weigh stations also perform other functions related to legal compliance. They often check paperwork, look for any potential safety issues, as well as any other requirements as dictated by the Department of Transportation.

I can safely say this is a legit company that will get the job done.

There are a lot of options for auto transport these days, which surprisingly makes it harder to find a good company. I received more than 10 offers to ship my car, but I couldn’t decide on any of them... Fortunately, I made the right choice with A1 Auto Transport.
