How to prepare your vehicle for shipping
- Remove any personal items from the car: By law, auto shippers aren't allowed to transport vehicles containing personal items when moving between states. You should also remove any aftermarket installations such as DVD players and GPS navigation systems to reduce the chances of them being damaged or stolen.
- Wash your vehicle: By doing so, you get to clearly see the damages to your vehicle. Note them down and also take pictures. These will serve as evidence should anything happen to your car.
- Leave about a quarter tank of gas: You are advised to only leave about a quarter tank of gas in your vehicle as leaving a full tank could bring additional charges due to the increased weight.
- Take note of the condition of your car: Document the state of the tires, and any other item that can be switched.
- Car maintenance before transport: Make sure that your car has been serviced by a qualified mechanic before handing it over for shipping. If it is not running, ensure to relay this information to the auto shipper beforehand.
- Keys: Make a spare copy of your car keys.
- Bill of lading: This is the document where you list down all the dents and damages your car has before handing your car over to be shipped. Ensure that you and the auto shipping driver go through the dents and damages and sign off on the bill of lading together.
