- Can I pack items in my car during transport? - This question really varies from one company to another. In general, and according to federal law, auto transporters cannot haul personal items inside of a vehicle and they could face stiff penalties if they are ticketed during a DOT inspection. Some companies will, however, allow up to 100 pounds of personal content as long as there are no flammable liquids, weapons or other illegal cargo contained in the vehicle. Speak to your agent to inquire about their personal policy on shipping personal items in the car. Take note that personal items are not covered by insurance when they are left inside of a vehicle. You will be exposing them to the risk of theft, damage or other loss if you do choose to leave anything in the vehicle.
- Will I need to drain the fuel from my car before it is loaded? - You will not need to drain the fuel from your vehicle before it is loaded but you will want to drive the fuel down to no higher than a quarter tank. This is due to weight limits that truckers have when they are transporting vehicles. Gas will add extra weight to a truck and could cause a driver to have an overweight load. If you are shipping a motorcycle and it is crated, you will need to drain the fuel from the tank.
- Will mileage be significantly raised when my car is being shipped? - No, your mileage will not increase aside from a small amount for loading and unloading the vehicle. Be sure to keep a record of your mileage as it is when the car is loaded and check it again when the car is delivered to compare and make sure that the car has not been driven while it was out of your possession.
