How much does it cost? The cost of shipping is something that can vary based on a number of factors, including things like fuel costs, shipping distance, vehicle type, service requested, and several other things, depending on what type of auto transport services you need. Between 50 cents to one dollar per mile is a good general starting point, though it can cost less per mile for long distance car shipments.
What information do I need? Before contacting an auto transport, you’ll want to put together all the necessary documents and information. Most of the required paperwork is what you’d expect; things like the title, registration and proof of insurance. If you’re shipping a vehicle overseas or to another country, there may be additional requirements, such as the bill of sale, or power of attorney if you’re shipping on behalf of someone else.
How long will it take? As you may expect, the amount of time it takes to ship a vehicle depends largely on how far its going. For cross country transport from Seattle to New York, for example, a standard trip could take up to two weeks. For shipments within the same state, it’s often possible to get it done in one day.

One of the best ways you can save yourself some money (and time!) is by planning ahead. Last minute jobs and expedited shipping come with an additional cost so if you can avoid it and arrange for shipping far enough in advance, it’s a great way to relieve some of the stress and financial burden. Another benefit of planning ahead is that you’re better equipped to deal with unexpected issues should they arise since more time generally means more flexibility from the shippers perspective.
Many auto shippers offer discounts to their customers, but they are often not highlighted in advertisements, web copy, or marketing materials. In other words, it’s not a bad idea to ask about potential discounts you may qualify for when getting a price quote.
Some of the possible discounts include many that you’re probably familiar with from other industries: senior citizens, AAA members, university faculty, members of the military, students, and so on. Some shippers will also offer a discount to first-time customers, multiple vehicle discounts, and there’s often a price break for round-trip booking.
AAA provides a many discounts that members may not even be aware of. Click here for information on some of the ways to save using your AAA card.
Another important aspect to consider is that the time of year can affect the cost. There are seasonal discounts available, especially if you’re a snowbird that winter months in a warmer climate. The winter months can be slow for certain companies so they’re more than happy to offer a price break in order to keep their carriers full!
