Investment and Expenditures to Start and Run Car Hauling Business

Initial investments and operational expenses involved in starting and running a car hauling business are divided into different categories.

Insurance: Cargo hauling insurance is the legal expense required as a part of the initial investment and monthly expense. The total amount needed for this section is usually $250k to $500k in coverage and $1 million to $2 in insurance liabilities depending on the hauling capacity of your company. 

While monthly insurance expenses for a single carrier usually range from $800 to $1400. You can consider this range as a base amount that changes depending on the truck, car hauling capacity, and types of cars you must move. 

CDL: Although CDL (Commercial Driving License) isn't a big part of initial investment, being a meager amount, it's a mandatory expense as you cannot drive any carrier without CDL. You need to confirm that all your hired drivers have obtained CDL from relevant authorities, even as an operator. CDL for one driver usually costs $100 for the complete process. 

Equipment You Need: You need a truck and a trailer, depending on your business plan. If you're starting for the first time, a used truck and rig can be a better option. This equipment is an immediate requirement and can cost you anywhere between $15k to more than $150k. This is the base range while you need to research the market to check the best available option depending on your desired auto hauling capacity. After buying vehicles, you also need to estimate and decide on a monthly budget to carry out any regular maintenance of the truck. This budget will keep you safe from any uncertain situation, which can eventually be a loss if you're not taking care of consistent maintenance. 

MC and USDOT Registration Costs from Operating Authority: MC and USDOT are mandatory registrations and have legal importance, just like CDL. The operating authority of your company is now referred to as the USDOT pin, which is a consolidated registration number for both MC and USDOT. The total processing fee of these registrations is also a significant expense but is only about $300. 

Operational Company Expenses: Once you're made all the initial investments and are ready to kick off your journey as an auto hauler, you need to prepare a budget for fixed and variable monthly expenses for running your business. Fixed payments will usually include your monthly insurance and fixed business operation costs such as salaries and monthly software subscriptions. The variable part of the expenses will consist of gas charges, rood food expenses, any irregular maintenance cost, fuel, other taxes, etc. 

How to Become an Auto-Hauler

If you're starting a car-hauling business following all the above steps, you'll be working as an owner of the company and be responsible for taking care of car transportations. I considered selling my car when I moved to Washington. It was old and rusty, but I grew attached to it. So, I called a couple companies to transport it to my new home, but they both fell through.
