Car Shipping FAQ’s
Once you have booked auto transport, you may want to keep a few things in mind so you will be fully prepared for professional car shipping services:
- How long does it take for my car to be transported once the driver picks it up? - Car transportation times will vary and can be quite different from one time to another. In general, it can take from 1-2 days for local moves, 3-4 days from one coast to the Midwest and up to 14 days or more for a cross country move. Factors such as weather, accidents, acts of God, breakdowns and unexpected maintenance and other issues can affect the delivery times of auto transport. Most companies will provide a window of 2-3 days instead of giving an actual date or time for delivery due to the many variables that can affect times when driving.
- Do I need to be present when the car is picked up? - Yes. The vehicle owner needs to be present when the car is picked up as paperwork will need signing when the car is inspected. If you cannot be present you will need to let your agent know and choose someone to stand in your place as there is a release form that needs signing before the car can be loaded or dropped off.
- Will my car be insured while it is in the auto transporters possession? - All motor carriers are required by regulations to have valid cargo insurance to cover the vehicles they transport. It is always advisable to keep a private insurance policy to cover the vehicle as well.
- Am I allowed to transport personal items in the car?
Federal law does not permit anything to be shipped inside a vehicle while it is being transported. The only items that are legally able to stay in a car during transport are tire changing tools and a spare tire. If you leave anything in the vehicle, be alert to the fact that if anything is lost, stolen or damaged they will most likely not be covered or physically replaced by the company.
