Can you get a refund if you don’t want to ship your car, but have already paid a car shipping company? What about after your car is shipped? These are great questions, and you can find all the answers you need from A-1 Auto Transport below.
Are Refunds Provided If I Change My Mind About Shipping My Car?
Yes. If you change your mind about shipping your car before it’s shipped, you can almost always get a full refund for your shipment. However, this does depend somewhat on the company that you’ve chosen to ship your car. Some companies may keep your initial deposit (usually around $100 to $200) if you cancel, while others will give you a full refund.
Before you choose to ship your car and sign a contract, it’s a very good idea to check the fine print and learn about the company’s cancellation policy. For example, a company may offer a full refund with your deposit if you cancel up to two weeks before your shipment is scheduled to be sent – but if you wait until a week before the shipment date, you may forfeit your deposit, or have to pay an additional penalty.
You can look at the contract for more information before signing, or discuss these terms with the car shipping company directly to get a full overview of your responsibilities, and what happens after you have agreed to ship your car and decide to cancel the service.
Can I Get A Refund After My Car Has Been Shipped?
The answer is usually “no.” As long as the car has reached its destination intact and the car shipping company has fulfilled their end of the deal, they are in no way obligated to offer you a refund. It’s extremely unlikely that you will get a refund in this case.
And this makes sense. After all, you have paid for the services of the auto shipping company – and if your car has arrived at its destination, they have legally fulfilled the obligations of their contract. Even if you have issues like bad communication, delays on your shipment, rude truck drivers or representatives, or other inconveniences, you’re not entitled to a refund.
You certainly may want to consider choosing a different auto shipping company in the future – but there’s no real legal ground for a refund unless your contract has been violated. Some auto shipping companies may offer a discount or partial refund if you are seriously unhappy about the services you received, but this is by no means guaranteed.
Can I Get A Refund If My Car Is Damaged Or Destroyed During Shipment?
Yes. Usually, if there is serious damage to your car, you will be able to get back the money you spent on car transportation services as part of your insurance settlement. A reputable auto transportation company will carry liability insurance, as required by the Department of Transportation (DOT). If your car is damaged, you will be compensated through this insurance policy.
However, this is usually only the case if serious damage is done to your car. For example, if the transport truck overturns and your car is totaled, you can be compensated for the value of your car and other associated damages.
For minor scratches, dings, and other damage that may not be as easy to notice, the story is a bit different. You may still be able to file an insurance claim, but you will need to prove that the damage to your car happened when it was being transported. This is why it’s very important to take photos and video of the car’s exterior and interior before shipping.
In addition, you may not get full compensation for the cost of shipping your car in this case. It may be possible to recover damages in a lawsuit, but this is often not worth the cost or the time it will take to go through legal action against a car shipping company.
