Permits and Laws Regulating International Shipping on Vehicles
You must be sure to have your import permit before shipping your vehicle. This permit, along with all of the paperwork and other documents must be presented to the customs official with your passport. This allows the official to check the proper documents and ensure that everything is in order. Understand that only after the customs official has reviewed your case and received confirmation that everything is in order will your vehicle be released. When customs releases your vehicle they will provide you with a Bill of Entry. This legal document, stamped by customs, must be presented to the driver’s license department in order to obtain a motor vehicle license.
Keep in mind that if there is some delay in the stamping by customs it is possible to make a provisional payment towards the releasing of your vehicle. This provisional payment is usually 20% of duties and 16.5% of taxes. This payment will be refunded once the situation has been corrected.
Only one vehicle can be imported per family, duty-free and a tax of 15% will be applied to this vehicle. You also will be required to keep the vehicle under your ownership for up to 2 years after it has been imported. There is a contingency that stipulates an import permit is not required for temporary residents. If you re-export your vehicle within a year, you fall under this category. When exporting your vehicle you will also need to consider how you want it shipped. There are two options Roll on Roll which consists of driving your vehicle onto the cargo ship and driving it off. This option is for the vehicle only; other items cannot be included in this export. The second option is to ship by container. This allows you to secure other items in with your car and ship it in an enclosed container to Namibia.
US Ports for Transfer
There are 3 ports from which you can ship your vehicle to Namibia. They are located in Savannah, New York, and Los Angeles. Keep this in mind when deciding how and when to ship your vehicle as you will be required to meet both in-state shipping costs as well as international. Regulations in and out of the USA differ greatly, and these differences depend on the country to which you are exporting your vehicle. Contact the embassy with any questions you have regarding the export of your vehicle. Regulations change occasionally and it is important to be aware of this so that you can ship your vehicle properly and legally.
