Armenia Vehicle Registration Process

The Vehicle Registration Process For Armenia

The vehicle registration process is a relatively new development in Armenia, having only begun in 1991 along with many other changes that came about as a result of the Soviet Union dissolving. That said, it is a relatively straightforward process with pretty clearly defined steps and procedures. Here’s what you’ll need to know to register a vehicle you’ve brought into Armenia.

Necessary Documents

In order to register a vehicle in Armenia, you’ll need to provide documents to confirm your identity and address. The common methods apply here so a driver’s license, ID or passport work for confirming your identity and a utility bill or bank statement will suffice to prove your residence.

You should also keep in mind that if you’re brining in a vehicle from outside of Armenia, the taxes will be applied at around 30%, which applies to the entire shipping cost.

Driver License

You must bring your current license with you to get a valid Armenian license. It must be current and be translated into Armenian within the six months prior to applying for a local license. You will also need to take an eye test, and depending on how long you’ve been driving and the status of your license, you may also be required to take a written and road test. Proof of an Armenian residence will also be needed to get a driver license.

Rules Of The Road: Driving In Armenia

In some parts of Armenia, the roads can be a little rough, especially by American standards. Since this is the case, you should take precautions when driving to look out for potholes or obstacles which could cause damage. Additionally, the snow chains and winter tires are necessary during certain times of year because of the amount of snowfall in the country.

As far as traffic signs are concerned, things operate a little differently than what you may be used to. For one, they are more uniform than our signs in the U.S. Almost all road signs are triangular in Armenia with most depicting a picture that explains the meaning. You can view this PDF which has images of the most commonly used road signs.
