Tire Maintenance Tips

Maintenance is an essential part of the health of any vehicle, but one of the things that’s often overlooked is the condition of the tires. Sure, we recognize when there’s an issue, but proper tire maintenance involves more than replacing them when there’s worn tread or a puncture. After all, your tires are the only point of contact your vehicle has with the road, and as such, affects all aspects of handling, performance, and safety while driving.

Inspect Tires Regularly

In order to take good care of your tires, you need to inspect them regularly. Obviously, you want to look at things like wear and tread to make sure they’re in good shape and there’s no uneven wear, but you should also keep an eye on the sidewalls for signs of damage or wear. Any bulges, cuts, or cracks warrant concern and may be cause for replacement or repair, depending on how severe the damage. For more in-depth information on what to look for when inspecting your tires, see this article.

Inflation, Rotation, Balancing & Alignment

Maintaining proper tire pressure is important not just for the care of your tires, but your entire car. Keep them inflated properly and don’t neglect any sensors that alert you to an issue with tire pressure. If your vehicle doesn’t have sensors, check them periodically when you’re refueling to make sure they’re at the appropriate pressure. Along the same lines, tires should be rotated regularly so that they tread does wear evenly. Uneven wear can be a sign of an alignment or unbalanced issue, which should also be remedied as soon as you notice the issue. If you have a long drive planned at any point, be sure to check off all these items before starting your trip.

Seasonal Tire Changes

If you live or travel in an area with extreme weather conditions, you should change your tires appropriately according to the season. This is especially true of colder climates where winter tires not only make sense but provide a much safer driving experience in rain or snow, as well on roads that may ice over in colder temperatures. Once the winter weather passes, you’ll want to switch back to regular or all-weather tires as appropriate.

Tire Storage

If you do switch tires depending on the season, or even if you keep extras on hand, be sure to take care when storing them. Ideally, tires should be stored in a cool dark area, and away from conditions that may damage. Direct sunlight is not good for tires, not are gasoline, grease, oil, or other things that may frequently be found on the floor of workshops and garages. Tires are best stored indoors, but if you must store them outside, again try to keep them out of the sun and elevated so that ground moisture doesn’t affect performance.

There are a lot of options for auto transport these days, which surprisingly makes it harder to find a good company. I received more than 10 offers to ship my car, but I couldn’t decide on any of them... Fortunately, I made the right choice with A1 Auto Transport.
