The history of the Port of Wilmington
The deep water port was founded in 1923 and has been under the ownership and management of Diamond State Port Corporation. It is located just at the confluence of the Delaware River and the Christina River, about 65 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, in Wilmington, Delaware. It measures a total of 308 acres in total, a large enough area to handle high tonnage every day. It initially was a fresh fruits and petroleum products port, but its proximity to the Atlantic opened up more opportunities. The strategic location created a new opportunity for the port to expand its product portfolio.
How it came to be a major vehicle shipping port
Europe and the Middle East together form one of the largest car manufacturing regions in the world. With a great percentage of their market being the US, this opened up possibilities of shipping vehicles into the US through the already existing Port of Wilmington, owing to the direct route it provides from the Atlantic. Vehicle shipments started mostly as imports, and over the years, the port has expanded its facilities to also offer vehicle exports from the US. Shipping cars to or from Port of Wilmington is as it is today, thanks to its history.
