What does the car shipping process involve? The answer to that question is only obvious to shipping companies, car dealers, and automobile enthusiasts. It is important that YOU understand the process before hiring a car shipping company. And, that is the purpose of this article.
Finding a car shipping company
The first step of shipping a car is finding a good auto transport company. It is not just about asking “Can you move my car for me?” You need to determine how experienced a company is. Companies that have been in the industry for long generally provide better services.
Another criterion is trustworthiness. You can determine this by looking at online reviews and previous customer testimonials. Trustworthiness and experience often go together.
The most important consideration is affordability. Consider the auto shipper offering rates within your budget. Try to find the sweet spot between quality and price. Visit this page to compare some of the top auto shipping companies.
Request a quote
After identifying several good auto shipping companies, request quotes. Shipping companies have rate calculators on their websites. The most accurate quote is the one you get by calling the carrier. Give detailed information about the condition of the car, its location, and its destination. That is the best way to get an accurate quote.
After receiving quotes from different companies, select the company you will work with.
Contact the company
The next step is to contact your preferred auto shipper. Call them and discuss the ideal pickup and delivery options, the transport method, the pickup dates, and other details. The company will then send you some forms to fill in. Up to this point, you can still opt out.
Only send back the documents if you are certain you want to work with the company.
The company works on your order
After sending back the forms, you are officially a client. The move my car for me company starts working on your order. They arrange the specifications of your order, assign your order a transport means, and then contact you with the expected pickup date. Normally, this process takes 2 to 3 days.
If you preferred the terminal-to-terminal delivery, the company then tells you when to take your vehicle to the terminal.
Prepare for shipping
After placing the order, prepare our car for pickup. Clean the vehicle and remove any valuables. Vehicle shipping experts recommend that you empty the gas tank or leave it less than halfway full. Also, you should turn off the alarm and remove the radio antennae. Click here for tips on how to prepare your vehicle for shipping.
A day before the pickup date, a dispatcher, or driver will contact you just to make sure the vehicle is ready for shipping. The time between placing an order and pickup is dependent on the location of the car, and demand for shipping along routes close to your location.
When the driver arrives at the pickup location, they expect to find you. In case you are not available, arrange for a friend to be present during pickup. Most companies require you to record the condition of the car in the Bill of Lading form during pickup.
Filling the form should take less than 20 minutes. Take photos of the vehicle so that you will have your own records in the event you need to make damage claims. The carrier loads and secures your vehicle in the truck.
Delivery takes anywhere between 1 to 20 days, depending on the destination and distance. Please note that truck drivers are limited to drive only 500 miles a day. Other factors that may delay the delivery are weather, bad road conditions (especially in rural areas), and unexpected traffic.
A day before reaching the destination, the driver will call you. They expect to meet you at the destination. Once the vehicle arrives, you should inspect it and record any damages on the Bill of lading. Again, take photos to support any damage claims.
If the car is to be delivered to a terminal, make sure you are present when it arrives.
Payment and rating
Most people prefer the Cash on Delivery (COD) payment method. If this is the option you chose, the shipping company expects you to pay after inspecting your vehicle. The other payment option involves making a small deposit after pickup, then making the full payment after delivery.
It is good practice to rate companies for services offered. If their services were satisfactory, go to their website and leave a positive testimonial. When you find the time, log in to consumer rating websites such as Consumer Affairs and give an honest review.
The move my car for me process is quite simple if you hire a reputable auto transport company. A-1 auto transport is an industry leader with years of experience and satisfied customers.
