What Is the Average Cost of Moving to Another State?

Are you planning on moving to another state?

If the answer is yes, you’re probably wondering how much the move will cost

While there’s no set answer as to how much a move to another state will cost, we’re here to list and break down the various factors that will influence how much you’ll end up paying for your interstate move.

Before we jump into the types of costs associated with moving to another state, we’re going to rattle off some quick tips to help make your relocation a success.

How Can I Make My Interstate Move a Success?

Planning, starting early, selecting your moving method, deciding whether to hire movers, and packing efficiently are necessary preliminary measures for an interstate move. The first step in planning is to develop an all-encompassing to-do list of the tasks you need to complete for the move. Take time to sit with yourself or with other people you live with to brainstorm this list, so no stone is left unturned. Your to-do list should include packing methods, transferring or canceling services, and deciding whether to hire professional movers.

Early planning helps mitigate the pressures brought on by an interstate move. If you’re hiring a professional moving service, you’re going to need to coordinate the service in advance. Waiting too long to set up professional moving assistance could result in the service being booked during your ideal relocation time.

Weekend moving times are busier than Monday-Thursday moves, so be sure to book at least a month ahead if you’re relocating over a weekend.

It’s vital to understand the various types of moving methods to find a service that’s right for you. If you choose to book professional movers, you can either let them do all the packing, transporting, and unpacking, or do some of the work yourself and let the movers handle all of the heaviest items.

If you’re performing some packing, try and pack as efficiently as possible. Placing heavy items toward the bottom of boxes, organizing boxes, and making sure boxes close are essential steps that will make unloading easier.

How Do I Choose a Moving Company?

Scanning online reviews is a great way to start your search for the ideal moving company. Online services such as Angie’s List provide plenty of online reviews for you to conveniently sort through. Watch out for red flags when reviewing moving assistance options, and professional moving companies should be licensed with the Federal Motor Carrier Association and possess proper licensing for interstate moves.

You can often locate better deals by sourcing quotes from multiple moving companies. Moving companies provide potential customers with binding or non-binding offers. Binding offers are a fixed price, while non-binding offers may result in the customer paying more or less after completing the job. If the idea of a non-binding offer makes you nervous, try requesting a “guaranteed-not-to-exceed” offer, which allows customers to pay the estimated cost or the binding cost.

Do your best to keep sensitive materials and items on you during the move. Sensitive items can include Social Security cards, financial documents, and more.

Below is a quick list on how to prepare before we get into costs:

  • Identify your moving location
  • Outline your moving budget
  • Decide your moving method
  • Plan early
  • Change your address and transfer utilities
  • Make arrangements for pets
  • Locate healthcare services in your new area

While moving costs are relatively uncertain, we’re here to clear up some of the fog for a clearer picture.

How Much Does Using a Professional Moving Company Cost?

Enlisting the help of a professional moving service to do everything for you from A-Z comes at a cost—but that cost is justified. Hiring moving professionals vastly mitigates the moving process and frees up more time for you to plan and take action. Let’s cut to the chase. The average interstate move costs around $5,630 based on an average weight load of 7,100 pounds and a 1,200-mile travel distance.

If you’re wondering how far 1,200 miles is, it’s roughly the distance between New Jersey and South Florida. Labor costs, distance traveled, shipment weight, insurance costs, and add-on fees will affect your interstate move’s final price tag.

We know not everyone wants to book a professional moving service, so we’ve come up with some DIY options to help you out.

What Is a Moving Truck Rental?

Moving trucks present a more affordable form of assistance. After you rent a moving truck, you’ll have to lift and load the items into the vehicle and transport them yourself. U-Haul, Budget, and Penske are examples of companies people commonly use for moving truck rentals.

Are you wondering how much this is going to cost?

Earlier we gave the distance example of an average moving cost from New Jersey to South Florida. That same route would cost around $1,700 with a moving truck. Your overall cost will be impacted by the time you need the truck for, the size truck you require, equipment rentals, and gas costs.

Renting a moving container is fairly similar to moving truck rental.

What Is a Moving Container?

Moving containers are portable and provide users with storage space before, during, and post-move. The average cost of renting a moving container for an out of state move is $2,231.

Your moving container costs will be calculated based on:

  • How long you need the container
  • The number and size of containers you need
  • The distance you’re moving
  • Whether or not you’re storing in a climate-controlled environment

These fees all sound pretty straightforward, but don’t forget about hidden fees that can pop-up during an interstate move:

What Hidden Fees Might I Be Subject to During My Move?

Property closing costs, vehicle shipping, moving supplies, and the need to buy new furniture are examples of hidden fees during a move.

If you’re purchasing a home in a different state, be prepared to pay title insurance, realtor fees, and appraisal fees to finalize your purchase. Unless you plan on driving your vehicle(s) to your moving location, you’re going to have to organize vehicle shipping.

The methods for shipping vehicles are:

Open carrier transport is the most common method of transporting vehicles, while enclosed auto transport offers higher car protection levels for an increased price. Airfreight shipping is the fastest and safest way to ship a vehicle, but the most expensive. Owners of luxury vehicles should look toward enclosed auto carrier transport or air freight shipping.

Common examples of moving supplies include:

  • Cardboard boxes
  • Foam pouches
  • Packing tape and paper
  • Labels
  • Scissors
  • Box cutters

—and more.

The chances are relatively high that you’ll have to purchase some new furniture for the location you’re moving to, so set aside some money in your budget to account for that old chair, couch, or any other furniture item you want to replace.

Should I Hire Professional Movers?

Professional movers significantly reduce the amount of stress you’ll experience during an interstate move. If you have the money in your budget for professional movers, we recommend hiring professional assistance for an interstate relocation. There are great options available if you don’t wish to hire professional movers as truck rentals and moving containers can help you get the job done.

It’s my number one pick in auto shipping to this day.

Due to the nature of my work, I must relocate every couple of years to where my company needs me. Because of this, I’ve tested several moving and auto transport companies over the years.

And my choice in terms of auto transport has to be A1 Auto Transport. It’s in the name, but also in the quality with which they do their jobs. I’ve never had a problem with this company.

The only time my shipment was delayed was during winter when a snowstorm closed down all the major roads. And they still found an alternative and got my car delivered before roads got unstuck.

When I moved to West Virginia, they picked up my car the very day I called them. I like to think they take special care of me considering all the business I’ve sent them. I’ll continue to support A1 Auto Transport. It’s my number one pick in auto shipping to this day.

You have my full support and recommendation!

I considered selling my car when I moved to Washington. It was old and rusty, but I grew attached to it. So, I called a couple companies to transport it to my new home, but they both fell through.

The first one couldn’t decide on a schedule. He would constantly change the pickup date till I got frustrated and canceled. The second was insufferable, very rude on the phone, even worse in person.

They started picking a part my car asking me why I still have it. If that’s their opinion of my vehicle, how can I trust they’ll take care of it? If something happened midway, why wouldn’t they just blame it on the car instead of paying up?

So, I cancelled this company as well and turned to A1 Auto Transport. From the get go, they were very different from my past options. Their website was very professional and up to date, full of useful information. I requested a quote using their online form, and I got an email response within an hour. Surprisingly fast!

If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought they were lacking customers, but the email spoke for itself. In just one email, everything I needed to know was there, including a contact number I could use to get more information or confirm the transport.

I called and got things rolling. I was very pleased with the driver. He followed standard procedure and represented his company well. Can’t remember his name, but props to him!

The car arrived in Washington 6 days later in excellent condition. From what I understand, the transport was delayed a bit by a storm, but since the time window was 4-6 days from the beginning, I don’t really care. You have my full support and recommendation!

I can safely say this is a legit company that will get the job done.

There are a lot of options for auto transport these days, which surprisingly makes it harder to find a good company. I received more than 10 offers to ship my car, but I couldn’t decide on any of them.

After doing some research, I got even more worried reading about all the scams and accidents that can happen. But, I have work to do and couldn’t afford to drive my newly purchased Mini Cooper all the way to Virginia.

Fortunately, I made the right choice with A1 Auto Transport. They are very good at their jobs. I spent more than an hour drilling Joe with various questions, and he never once lost his patience. He saw I was interested, so he bore with me until I was satisfied. The driver was also very courteous and my car was intact on arrival. I couldn’t have asked for more.

By the way, the price we first agreed on stayed the same. There were no delays or unexpected “surprises.” I can safely say this is a legit company that will get the job done.

We give A1 Auto Transport a big 10 out of 10!

We give A1 Auto Transport a big 10 out of 10! We chose them to move our car from California to Vermont, since we needed professionals.

We were abroad during the transport, so the transport was a bit tricky. The driver had to pick it up from storage on short notice and get it to its destination within at most 10 days. I was happy to note it arrived sooner. We got it 3 days early, right when we got home to pick it up. It made getting around way easier. Awesome service!
