How to prepare your car for shipping

You cannot keep personal items in the car during transportation. It is not allowed by the Department of Transportation. You should also remove aftermarket installations like GPS systems, stereo, and DVD players to keep them safe from loss or damage. The insurance policy does not cover the items. Make sure that you give the car a thorough wash about a day before the pick-up date. Inspect the car for blemishes, chips, dents, and scratches while noting them down. Take photographs of all sides of the vehicle and keep them. The necessary level of gas needed to drive your car during the shipping process is about 1/4. Anything that goes above this can complicate the transportation process by adding weight and creating safety risks. Driving will only happen when we load and unload the vehicle. Run the following maintenance checks on the vehicle.

  • Check under the car for fluid leaks.
  • Top-off all fluids to the sufficient levels.
  • Keep the battery on a full charge.
  • Check the pressure on all tires.

The driver will need a set of all the keys to the vehicle. Make a spare set so that you don’t risk losing your only set during transportation.

Other preparation tips

  • Send someone you trust to represent you if you cannot drop off or pick up the car by yourself.
  • Make sure that the transporter inspects the vehicle before loading it on the truck. Both of you should go through the report and sign off if you agree with the contents.
  • When you receive the car, you will inspect it for damage that may have occurred during transportation. Record everything on the bill of lading and use it to lodge a claim from the insurer.
  • Make sure that the transport company offers enough insurance cover for shipping cars to or from Stevenson.
  • To learn the state regulations on driving, car ownership, and transportation, visit the Department of Transportation’s website.
