Spring Bike Project

This motorcycle started out as a non-running project cruiser styled bike with an outdated his and her seat, a “sissy” bar, and ape styled handlebars. It means a lot to me as it was the first project that my dad and I did together as father and son. Before this undertaking, I knew nothing about tools, mechanics, and engines. My dad said, “no way was a son of his going away to college without having a basic knowledge of mechanics and tools”. I laughed, for me, it was just an opportunity for us to do something together.

So that’s what we did during the winter and spring of 2017 in our cold garage in Ringwood, New Jersey. On any given day, what a sight it must have been to see us with our latex gloves, goggles and old grease smeared clothing. Yet, with the help of a Chilton’s mechanics manual, some great tunes, and lots of coffee we got to work. Disassembly, de-grease re-assemble…don’t forget to look up the “torque specs”. That was how I received my “education” and I am the better for it. It was a time in my life that I will always treasure.
Hearing the roar of that engine for the first time, to be able to witness the grin on both of our faces, to appreciate the unique smell of raw gas and oil…was priceless. Yes, I learned.
We both ride the bike often. I can tell you I will never sell it off forget the lessons I learned, or the time I spent with my dad. It will follow me on all my life’s travels.
The only way it will ever be transported is by A-1 motorcycle shipping.
