Know If You Should Be Present When The Mover Arrives At Your New Residence

Most people understand the importance of being present at their previous home when the movers arrive to do the packing and the loading. Not only will you be able to supervise them and safeguard your items but you will be available to provide guidelines and anything else they might need. Similarly, one must be present when the movers arrive at your new home. Many times the home owner will drive ahead of the truck and get to the new house before the movers or a spouse/family member should travel the day before. Here is why it’s important for someone to be home when the movers get there.

Should You Be Present When The Mover Arrives At Your New Residence

Let them in

If there is no one to let the movers in when they arrive, they won’t be able to offload your stuff into the new house. Someone must be there to open the gate and the front door so the movers can go in. You will also show them where to park and how to position the truck to make unloading easy.

Provide a floor plan

The last thing you want your movers to do is to put boxes anywhere in the house. There must be a systematic plan of where everything goes according to rooms. It’s your duty as the home owner to provide this guidance and how the movers where everything is going. Not only will this make the job easier for the movers but also for you when it comes to unpacking.

Prepare the house

There are many things that need to be done in a house before you can officially move in. Make sure all the utilities are connected and working. For instance if the movers will get there late they will need light. You should also do some cleanup in preparation of the items coming and clear the way for movers so that nothing obstructs their way when they are carrying heavy furniture and boxes.

Inspect your belongings

The most important reason why you must be present during the offloading is to inspect the items for damage or loss. Ideally, you should have the bill of lading at hand so that you can check as everything is offloaded from the truck. Be sure to inspect items that you fear could break or get lost before signing the bill. It is also your duty to go through your payment bill and ensure that everything is in order. Ensure that there are no hidden charges or inflated costs. If there is an issue with the move or your items, you must let them know and indicate on the bill of lading in case of any future action.

Unless your terms say otherwise, you should pay the movers after they deliver and unload your items into the new home. Be ready with enough cash or check book after the inspection to save time. This is also the time to tip them and offer some refreshments for a job well done.

The importance of being present when the movers arrive at your new home cannot be over-emphasized. You must make whatever travel arrangement that you need to ensure that you get to the house before them.
