As it is with every international transport, you would have to provide a bunch of documents to the U.S. port and to the Malta Customs Authority. Prior to taking up this task, you might want to make sure that you’ve prepared:
- Social Security Card.
- Car Title.
- Driver’s License.
- Proof of purchase alongside details of the vehicle such as model makes, engine number and chassis number.
- Signed power of attorney if you need us to pick your car up.
Prior to importing your vehicle, you must ensure that you live in Malta for at least six months and that you have owned the car for the last six months before the shipping. There are 10% taxes on permanent imports while temporary ones are free. You also have to fill out different forms – VEH01, VEH02 and so forth. For any further information, you might want to contact the Embassy of Malta.
You have two options in front of you – Container Shipping and Roll On/Roll Off. Of course, which one you decide to go for is completely up to you and you must make the decision based on your budget requirements and shipping needs.
RORO requires you to drive your car on its own vehicles on the shipping deck. Then, you have to empty it out of all personal belongings apart from the car jack, floor mats and spare set of keys. What is more, your vehicle is going to be constantly exposed to all of the elements – this is something that should be considered. Of course, this is why RORO shipping is so quick and cheap. The vehicle is driven on the deck and secured in a parking bay and that is all that you need to pay for.
Container Shipping, on the other hand, involves your car being safely stored within an enclosed container. This is particularly beneficial, especially if your car is expensive or collectible. You can also ship as many personal belongings as you want.
