Documentation and cost of shipping.
The import taxes are high and if you are planning to have your vehicle imported from USA, you need to factor in the 40% import tax. If it is a luxury car, there might be additional cost based on the evaluated value of the vehicle. Additionally, you cannot import a right hand drive vehicle. For standard vehicle, there is the import duty and the turnover tax while for luxury vehicles; there is import duty, turnover tax and additional excise duty.
You are allowed to import the vehicle as temporarily which includes vehicles imported for the use in tourism, supervision of projects and businesses. They are imported on a temporary permit and have to be exported after the time period of the permit expires.
Due to distance and various levies, the cost can be high when shipping a vehicle to Laos. It is important that the total cost is calculated based on the value of the insurance, freight charges along with the weight and size of the vehicle. The age of the vehicle is also considered when shipping it to Xam Nua.
Some of the documents authenticating the import include:
- Vehicle insurance.
- Details of the vehicle- VIN, make, model, brand, chassis/ engine number, weight.
- Registration certificate.
- Ownership proof- passport/license.
At A1 Auto Transport service we’ll take care of the documentation submission so you don’t have to worry about it. There are other aspects to consider such as the import license and logistics of the move which we can handle completely.
Additionally, when you are looking at the total cost of the shipping, the method of shipping that you select plays an important role. We recommend using RORO or container shipping as the viable methods of ocean bound freight shipping methods.
This is the least expensive method as your vehicle is driven on the ship’s deck, harnessed in place and you only pay for the parking space. When it reaches the Vietnamese port, it will be driven off the ship. However, there are some restrictions which have to be followed including:
- Steam cleaning of the interiors.
- Remove air condition gas, personal items.
- Disable locks, alarms.
- Leave only car jack, floor mats, extra tire.
Sealed Container shipping.
This is more expensive than RORO but offers an extra layer of protection as the vehicle and other personal goods are sealed within large containers. These containers measure 20 feet or 40 feet depending upon your requirements and you can hire accordingly. There are no restrictions but steam cleaning the car will ensure that it is not quarantined at the port by the Lao P.D.R Cusoms.
