The capital of Northland region, Whangarei is the northernmost city located in New Zealand. It is also part of the Whangarei District. It was created in 1989 in order to administer both the city and its hinterland, the former Whangarei City.
If you want to move to Whangarei on a temp basis, or if you are returning to the country on a permanent basis, you will need to import your vehicle too. This process is going to take a while and is very demanding with the required paperwork needed to successfully complete this process. Requirements for Temporary import.
Tourists that want to visit Whangarei on a temporary basis will want to bring their car with them. You can import temporarily for up to twelve months. While there, you will need to keep track of time and make sure you don't go over your time. You can keep your existing plates on your vehicle and you won't be required to pay any import taxes or VAT.
However, the vehicle will need to be certified by New Zealand Transport Authority and you must have all the legal requirements met in order to import your vehicle here. This certification ensures that your vehicle meets all certain vehicle standards required by New Zealand authorities. The physical inspection of a vehicle can take a while because it verifies a few different factors:
- Car’s odometer is working correctly.
- Car meets the standard minimum frontal impact regulations.
- Valid Carnet de Passages en Douane (Carnet).
The owner of the imported vehicle must always obtain proof that all these certifications are met before registering the vehicle. The New Zealand is only one of few countries that do not require a tariff duty on vehicles that are for personal use. There are some exceptions, such as the 10% customs duty charge, transaction fees of $29.96 on vehicles that value more than $1000, and an entry levy biosecurity system of $17.63.
New Zealand also charges goods and service tax which customs calculates on the basis of the value of your vehicle plus insurance plus freight. Then you can subtract any deductions for the depreciation. There is currently a flat percentage tax of 15%. GST is waived in a case that you are moving to New Zealand on a permanent basis and you are able to provide proof of residence. You will need to verify residency by providing any of the following documents:
- NZ/Australian passport.
- Valid New Zealand residence permit or visa.
- New Zealand visitor's visa or permit, which can be issued for at least three years.
- Valid NZ works visa or permit, which can be issued for at least twelve months.
Once your vehicle enters the Whangarei port, it will be inspected by the Ministry for Primary Industries for both inspection and cleaning. It will then be transferred to NZ customs in order to be cleared. You will need to have the following documentation with you to proceed:
- The commercial invoice which shows the amount paid and the date you purchased it.
- Certificate of Title.
- Bill of Lading.
- Current registration.
- Freight costs and insurance invoice.
- Odometer reading.
There are no extra tariffs in New Zealand so the importing your vehicle will not cost as much when compared to other countries.
