How to Ship a Car Internationally.
Shipping a car internationally has never been easier than it is today. With convenient shipping methods and affordable pricing, you can have your choice of transport to fit your budget as well as your time. The main ways to ship a car overseas are:
Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) - Shipping with RORO is the easiest way to have a car scheduled for the quickest, as well as the most affordable way possible. RORO is just the name used for shipping that allows the motor vehicle to be rolled on and rolled off of the transport carrier. RORO is used within the trucking industry to transport cars nationwide and is used in the shipping industry to transport cars overseas. RORO is very popular as a way to ship internationally by sea rather than to ship by air freight that can be more expensive. Since the 1970’s, RORO has been the most widely used form of sea transport around the world.
Container Shipping- Using a shipping container, or enclosed transport, is a secure way to have a valuable automobile shipped overseas. You will have a container fee added to your shipping bill, but when you need reliable service that includes extra precaution be taken during overseas transport, container shipping is the most preferred method to ship. Containers are sealed on both the exterior as well as the interior to prevent any possible damage from the elements during transport.
Once you have scheduled the automobile transport you will be able to pay for the cost of shipping and will have the convenience of reliable door to door pick-up and delivery.
Preparing the Car for Transport.
There are not too many things that you will need to do to prepare the car for shipping, but there are a few that are important. First, before the car is picked up to be delivered to the port you will need to make sure that it has been cleaned inside and out. This is important for several reasons. A damage inspection will be done prior to the car being shipped and a clean car is easier to spot signs of chipped paint, dents or dings. When the car is being transported it may be in places that people can see inside and having personal items left inside can be tempting for thieves. Personal items inside of cars can also become dangerous during transport because they can fly around in the car causing possible interior damage as well as have the potential to be slung out windows breaking them and causing damage to other motor vehicles loaded nearby. Your fuel should be at no higher than ¼ tank, and the fluid and battery levels should be adequate so you will be able to drive the car as soon as it is delivered to you in Venice.
Customs and Registration.
Italy has very lax customs regulations for car imports. You can only import one personal vehicle and it can be new or used, standard, classic or luxury. All residents have to pay taxes so you will need to apply for a tax code number immediately upon relocating to Venice. You also have to register the car and receive Italian license plates for the car. You will need the following paperwork when registering the car:
Driver’s License with Italian translation with it if not an Italian license.
- Motor Vehicle Title.
- Proof of Residency.
- Tax Code Number.
- Commercial Invoice or Bill of Sale.
- Car Registration.
- T2119 Application (Used Cars).
- NP2B registration (Used Cars).
- Certificate of Commerce if the car is company car.
Your shipping agent will be able to let you know what other documentation you may need for vehicle registration or customs agents. You will also need to pay taxes and import duties when shipping the car to Venice and your agent will let you know those amounts as well.
