One of the small towns in Tonga, Vaini is a populated destination known for the pristine beaches and blue seas. As public transport is nearly non-existent, you would need to import your own vehicle if you are planning on moving here for any reason.
Though there are regulations governing the import of vehicle, if you adhere to the policies and requirements and work with an international shipper like A1 Auto Transport Company, it is easy.
Regulations governing vehicle imports.
If you are importing a used car or it is an old vehicle, you might need special permission as the emissions laws are strict. Additionally, there are some documents which are needed by the Tongan Ministry of Revenue and Customs Services that are:
- Passport and driving license of the owner.
- IE462 form.
- Last odometer reading .
- Work visa/residence visa.
- Title deed/car registration.
- Bill of Lading.
You can take the help of A1 Auto Transport service to ensure that all of the documents are in order. You are allowed to import the vehicle on temporary and permanent basis, but you cannot sell it, if you brought the vehicle on a temporary permit. You have to be staying in New Zealand or Tonga for a minimum of 21 months, before you are allowed to import a vehicle. Other specific regulations include that you have to be New Zealand/Tonga citizen to import it tax free. You will need to prove that you owned and used the vehicle in United States for 12 months or more before you import it.
Before vehicle import to Vaini.
It's safer if you don't pack your personal belongings into your vehicle before you import it. The reason why you shouldn't pack it is because someone may steal your items in your car at some point during transport. In addition, the shipper who is in charge of your vehicle during the transport does not want to be held liable for personal belongings in your car. Additionally, if you ship by RORO it is mandatory to send an empty vehicle.
Irrespective of whether you are shipping by RORO or using container shipping to ship your vehicle, it is important for the owner to be present at the Port of Nukuʻalofa and get the vehicle cleared. However, we understand that you might not be able to go through the procedures alone and that is why one of our local shipping agents will be there with you.
If you have a limited budget, then Roll-on/Roll-Off works well especially if you only want to ship a vehicle. As only an empty vehicle is allowed, you cannot ship any personal goods. To ensure there are no delays, it is important to clean the vehicle, disable all car alarms and leave only a little fuel in the tank. The vehicle is driven on the ship’s deck, parked and secured and then driven off at the last port. However, if you have household goods to transport from USA, container shipping is better. Not only will your vehicle be protected better but the personal belongings can be kept in the large container and shipped together.
