Paperwork and documentation.
Both the U.S Customs and Border Protection and Mauritius Revenue Services require certain documentation that legalizes the move while ownership is verified for security reasons. Here are the important documents needed:
- Title of the vehicle.
- Vehicle purchase invoice.
- Ocean Bill of Lading.
- Proof of ownership- passport, license and photo ID.
- Insurance on the vehicle.
Some of the additional requirements that are needed in Mauritius include an Import permit which is authorized by the Ministry of Commerce and Cooperative. It is important to note that the age of the used vehicle that you are importing cannot be over 4 years old. It is imperative to submit the Cancellation of Registration certificate before registering it permanently.
There is 15% VAT and carbon dioxide emission is one of the components for taxation. For vehicles with 550 cc engine capacity are charged 15% while those above 2000 cc engine capacity are charged 100% excise and import taxes, in addition to VAT.
