Located in the eastern group of the Azores Archipelago, the Santa Maria Island is the southernmost island of the Azores. The island is known for having white sandy beaches, dry warm weather, and is a hotspot for tourists.
If you are here on an extended stay or want to move here permanently, you will need to have your own personal vehicle.
If you want to import your vehicle to the Santa Maria Island, the vehicle will need to pass the rules and regulations set forth and enforced by the Azores Island Consulate. You can contact them for an update. You will need to provide a wide range of documentation with your importing application request. Some documents you will need include:
- Bill of Lading.
- Title of the vehicle.
- Vehicle purchase invoice - under six months old.
- Proof of address in the Azores.
- VAT NR.
- Approval from Direccao Geral dos Impostos.
- Valid driver's license.
Tariff and shipping cost.
Duty and taxes will need to be paid before you can pick up your vehicle. These rates are determined by the value of your vehicle. They include 16% standard duty, VAT charges, and a license plate. Your vehicle will need to pass inspection before you will be allowed to drive it anywhere. Taxes and duties must be paid for before your vehicle can be released into your possession. A1 Auto Transport service will be able to help you come up with the cost of importing your vehicle.
Method of Shipping Vehicles.
There are documents as well as procedures that must be followed according to the Azores Customs Department, which comes under the jurisprudence of Portugal. A1 Auto Transport Service will be able to assist you through the import process. You will need to decide on two different shipping methods; container shipping and Roll On/ Roll Off method. You can decide what shipping method works best for you by several factors.
Container Shipping is a great option for those who want to ship more than just a vehicle to the islands. You will be able to select a 20 foot or 40 foot container for shipping. Your container will be loaded onto the deck of the ship by a crane. It will be loaded off the ship using a crane. This method of shipping is used for anyone who wants to protect a luxury vehicle or expensive vehicle from the elements of weather on board the cargo ship. A container will seal up protecting it from anything while in transport.
Roll On/ Roll Off shipping this method is the cheapest and the easiest. Your car is driven onto the deck of the ship and then transported. When it reaches the port, it will be driven off. Your vehicle cannot have any air conditioning gas or any personal belongings inside the vehicle. The vehicle will need to be steam cleaned both inside and out otherwise you will be delayed once it reaches the port or before it enters the ship. The delay will also include a professional hired to clean it for you and then you will be charged for that service. Once it has been cleaned, it will be presented again for importing.
