Situated in western part of Kosovo, Pec is the administrative headquarters of the Pec district and is located close to the Rugova Gorge. Regardless of the duration of your stay, if you intend staying here for over 3 months, it makes a lot of sense to import your vehicle from USA, as buying a new car might be more expensive.
As Kosovo is landlocked with no direct access to the sea ports, all ocean-bound freight cargo is offloaded in Albanian port of Durres and then land transported to Pec and other cities in Kosovo.
Due to stringent laws on imported vehicles, you need to have a third party insurance from a Kosovo insurance company before the vehicle can cross the border from Albania. It takes about five days to get the complete clearance from the Kosovo Customs. As the owner, you need to be present here or if you work with the experienced A1 Auto Transport Company, they can be provided with the Power of Attorney and complete the necessary procedures on your behalf.

Documentation for auto import.
Having a reliable shipping company like A1 Auto Transport service to guide you through can make the whole process easy. We have over 20 years of experience in international shipping of vehicles and understand the nuances of shipping to Europe, including Kosovo. To ensure that there are no delays, it is essential to have the paperwork in order. These are the documents that have to be filed with the U.S. Customs after notifying them about the potential export. These documents will have to be filed with the Kosovo Customs also as they will need to verify that the vehicle has entered their borders. You need to submit:
- Purchase invoice of the vehicle with the details- VIN, year, model and make.
- Car title deed.
- Driving license/Passport of the owner.
- Report on resale value of the vehicle.
- Insurance on the vehicle.
As per the laws in Kosovo, you are not allowed to bring in vehicles to Pec that is over 6 years old due to emission control. Additionally, as with any import, you have to pay taxes based on the value of the vehicle, insurance and the cost of freight charges. You are required to pay a fixed 11.5% as import duty and an extra tax of 16% on the vehicle. It is compulsory to have the right headlights and seat belts.
After the vehicle is imported, it is good to know about driving regulations in Kosovo so that you are always on the right side of law. You need to carry your passport, driving license and title deed of the vehicle with you at all times when you are driving. Your U.S issued driving license is only valid for 1 year and then you have to get a new Kosovo license issued if you intend staying here for a longer period.
Your vehicle will be shipped to Pec by container shipping or you can opt for Roll-on/Roll-Off method. The difference lies in the fact that container shipping is expensive but allows you to ship personal belongings along with the car while RORO is cheaper but the vehicle has to be shipped empty. In container shipping the vehicle is packed with in a large container and in RORO the car is secured to the ship deck bay. However, as the charges differ, you can decide which suits you best.
