Specific Requirements for Importing your Vehicle

You have to understand that the manufacturing year is not necessarily the same as the date of registration. The import duty, however, is using that second date as a stand point. You also have to know that it is currently illegal to import vehicles which are older than 8 years as per the regulations set forth by the Bureau of Standards of Kenya.

• Capacity of the engine: the larger your capacity of the engine is, the higher the duty of import will be.
• Excise Duty: Pursuant to the Excise Duty Act of 2015 it is currently KSh150,000 for vehicles less than 3 years old and for those which are over that mark = KSh200,000.
• VAT: The VAT is amounted to 16% of the value of the car and it’s collected by the Kenya Revenue Authority. The importer is also obligated to get a license before he imports the good in the country. There is an import fee of about 25% of the CIF value of all the goods. This is basically separate from any other taxes and you have to pay it additionally.
