Mogadishu or Humar as the locals refer to it as, is known as the largest city as well as the capital of Somalia. It is located near the coastal region on the Indian Ocean side. Mogadishu is known to have a very important and valuable port for trade and importing industry.
When you are ready to import your vehicle to Mogadishu, you need to be able to obtain all the necessary paperwork ahead of time so you are ready to import when you need it.
Somalia Customs Authority has rules and regulations that must be followed in order to successfully transport your vehicle from the United States to Mogadishu without any problems. South Africa may be strict with their importation rules and regulations, East Africa is not. You will need to provide the most common documentations such as
- Vehicle registration.
- Proof of insurance.
- Proof of ownership.
- Your license.
- Your passport.
- Title to your vehicle.
There are also standard custom duties that will need to be paid for in advance of importing. You will have four different ports that you can choose from when you need your vehicle in Mogadishu.
Documentation and Import Costs.
In addition to the documents needed above, you will need to pay your taxes due as well. You will be expected to pay between 3% and 70% Valorem duty too. The duty will run about 30%. If you have something non-essential or luxurious coming to port, you will be charged a higher rate. The government also will charge $1,300.00 when a luxury car is imported to Mogadishu. You will need to provide proof of residence, or a residence permit for Mogadishu when you fill out your paperwork for importing your vehicle.
Rules to Follow.
You will need to remove any external parts before the vehicle can be shipped so there are no delays in shipping. You will need to clean out your vehicle inside and out before you can bring your car onto the ship with the Roll On/ Roll Off method. You will be required to steam clean your vehicle before it can leave the dock otherwise it will be quarantined. If you don't do this, your vehicle will be moved to a quarantined area, then a cleaning facility, and finally back to shipping. You will be charged for the labor to steam clean your vehicle.
Shipping Methods to Choose From.
When you are shipping your vehicle to Somalia, you have two choices of transport: Roll On/ Roll Off and container shipping. The container shipping option is great for someone who may be shipping more than one vehicle or have household items to ship as well. Everything can fit into one container and then the container is closed up and moved to the deck of the ship by way of the crane.
The RORO method requires the vehicle to be rolled onto the deck of the ship and then strapped down for transport. The vehicle will need to be completely cleaned out and nothing left in it except for a spare tire, floor mats, extra keys and a car jack.
